Lohse may be a good fit for the Padres, but there’s little evidence that the Padres would ever pay any free agent anything. The most they’ve ever given a new player in free agency is the $11.5 million, TOTAL, they gave Orlando Hudson, which is including his buyout. They’re the cheapest organization in the game, evidenced by having been outspent by every team in the league over the past four seasons…by $20 to the closest franchise (Pittsburgh). They won’t sign Lohse.
They also have little chance of competing — their rotation candidates, even with Lohse, would be: Kyle Lohse, Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez, Eric Stults, Jason Marquis, Anthony Bass, Tyson Ross, (Casey Kelly), (Robbie Erlin), (Andrew Cashner DL), (Joe Wieland DL), (Corey Luebke DL). That’s basically a 5-6 WAR rotation total, even with sterling health and minimal regression.
c’mon success/failure depend a lot on what they’ll get from Luebke & Cashner. But sure, they’ve been very quiet and could certainly use a good SP to anchor the rotation. There are several available but it doesn’t appear that they want to spend anything to get it done.
