  1. Youkilis playing for the Yankees just seems wrong.

  2. Eventually, the Yankees should consider moving Cano to third and DHing A-Rod.

  5. I see it as pretty much a wash, since ARod isn’t a True Yankee either.

    Comment by Derek Jeter — December 12, 2012 @ 10:58 am

  6. What does he have to do to become a true yankee? I haven’t seen a breakdown yet.

    Comment by Neil — December 12, 2012 @ 11:00 am

  7. So the yankees have signed the best reliever on the market, 2 of the 5 best starters, and probably the best 3Bman.

    All on 1 year deals.

they are not scared to walk that tightrope.

    Comment by Steve — December 12, 2012 @ 11:23 am

  8. He needs to eat a baby. Only then can he become a true Yankee.

    Comment by Red Sox Fan — December 12, 2012 @ 11:29 am

  9. Seriously. Seems pretty obvious.

    Comment by Uncle Randy — December 12, 2012 @ 11:33 am

  10. I would seriously have to quit watching baseball for a year if my team signed Youkilis. Watching him bat with that awful stance makes me want to throw things at my TV.

So, I guess I’m glad he’s being inflicted upon a deserving fanbase.

    Comment by Sparkles Peterson — December 12, 2012 @ 11:35 am

  11. Nah. He just has to kill Virgil Cain’s brother. I wonder if his name was Matthew…

    Comment by Mike Green — December 12, 2012 @ 11:36 am

  12. Now THAT is an obscure reference! Joan Baez (among others, I guess) on FanGraphs. Wow.

Just one request: Eno, will you talk to Mike A about “jibe” vs. “jive”?

    Comment by wiggly — December 12, 2012 @ 11:41 am

  13. NotGraphs needs a post on guys who should be traded to the Yankees to force them to shave.

  14. LOL

  15. Until you realize Cano might not be on the team past this year.

    Comment by Steve — December 12, 2012 @ 12:35 pm

  16. I guess it’s better than having a guy with a pretty stance who can’t hit as well. nah….

    Comment by Steve — December 12, 2012 @ 12:36 pm

  17. And then, after considering that, you realize that there’s no chance in hell of Cano not being on the team in 2014 with $45 million coming off the books in Granderson, Pettitte and Rivera’s salaries and Jeter’s reduction. Not to mention that Kuroda might retire.

    Comment by YanksFanInBeantown — December 12, 2012 @ 1:04 pm

  18. What’s funny?

Name a better available closer than Mariano Rivera
Name a 5 available starters better than Pettitte.
Name a better available third baseman than Youk.

    I’ll wait.

    Comment by YanksFanInBeantown — December 12, 2012 @ 1:07 pm

  19. C’mon son, Joan Baez didn’t write that.

    Comment by Robbie Robertson — December 12, 2012 @ 1:32 pm

  20. I am available and I am very good at third base.

    Comment by Well-Beered Englishman — December 12, 2012 @ 1:57 pm

  21. Rafael Soriano blew only 4 saves while in 2011 Mo blew 5 saves, so there is your better reliever. I’d rather have Greinke, Sanchez, McCarthy, Jackson, Lohse, and Dempster above Pettitte. A better available third baseman is Eric Chavez. BOOM!

    Comment by Brian — December 12, 2012 @ 2:07 pm

  22. Although most people, at least on the interwebz, seem to now spell it this way these days, so maybe the dictionary will change, but the phrase used to be “jibes” with, not “jives” with (to be in harmony or accord; agree). No offense intended.

Love your stuff, just thought I’d pass along that bit of pedantry.

  25. Brian – It doesn’t count if your answers are obviously ridiculous. Face it, you got called out, had no (respectable) reply, and got OWNED.

  26. And you thought he was ugly before? Losing the goatee will make him look like his father is a light bulb and is mother is an egg.

  27. There is certainly a chance. Who plays 2B for the Dodgers??

    Comment by Steve — December 12, 2012 @ 3:42 pm

  28. His facial hair kind of made him look like a pedo to me. Donno why.

    Comment by Antonio Bananas — December 12, 2012 @ 5:05 pm

  29. Well, in fact, at one time, his mother WAS an egg.

    Comment by LK — December 12, 2012 @ 5:14 pm

  30. Someone other than Cano after the Yankees sign him to some ridiculous contract to make sure he stays a Yankee for life. They will have the money and there are no viable free agent signings that would prevent it. The Yankees don’t let homegrown superstars leave.

    Comment by YanksFanInBeantown — December 12, 2012 @ 5:37 pm

  31. Since it’s a nice article that neatly presents what there is to say, I’ll just point out that he already shaved in Chicago.

    Comment by AC of DC — December 12, 2012 @ 6:45 pm

  32. Wait… the complaint about signing a likely-to-be-good player to a 1-year contract is that he doesn’t fill a long term need? I thought the whole point of the 1-year deal was to delay having to fill that need when no optimal long term option presented itself.

    Comment by fhomess — December 12, 2012 @ 6:52 pm

  33. The perfect solution to a long-term need would be a long-term solution. They’ve solved what’s looking like a long-term need with a short-term solution. They’re going to run into this problem again next season and they probably won’t have Youkilis to sign, depending on his performance.

    Comment by Eno Sarris — December 12, 2012 @ 7:45 pm

  34. Good thing that they have Adams, who rakes whenever he is healthy, in AAA, I guess…

    Comment by YanksFanInBeantown — December 12, 2012 @ 7:54 pm

  35. Of course the perfect solution to filling a long term need is to a long-term solution, but how many of those are available in any given offseason, and how many of those are you able to actually land? It’s not like Evan Longoria or David Wright were coming to the Bronx. I think most people understand the reality that you can’t always get what you want when you want it. If you can’t, waiting another year isn’t a bad option. Circumstances change quite a bit even in one season, and the Yankees didn’t press for a long term option that’ll handcuff them even more than some of the long term contracts they have now will.

I’d be more inclined to criticize this deal from the perspective that now the Yankees have two injury prone third baseman rather than just one, without the benefit of starting the season with both of them healthy. If Youk gets hurt before A-Rod is ready to come back, then they’ve got the same hole they had a week ago, and that seems like a bigger problem than not filling the position for the next half decade. The Yankees financial muscle means that it’s not as important for them to have long term solutions at every position.

If you really want to push the issue of not finding a long term solution, then I think you have to look at the roster as a whole rather than complaining about one position, and that’s where the Yankee outlook has a lot of questions. On the assumption the Yankees will resign Cano, he’s really the ONLY primary position player that I expect to be contributing well to the team 3 years from now.

  36. Seriously, a 128 career wRC+, and you’re worried about whether his swing is aesthetically pleasing?
