  2. wow this would be something i’d be totally interested in and probably qualified to do.

    However i’m a life long Twins fan, and although i have a tender spot for the Red-Sox (maybe cause i just hate the yankees that thoroughly)
    They’re still co-AL opponents and I just don’t think I could go there, and I”m sure M. Murov would appreciate that.

    Job open like this with Minnesota any time?

  5. Job Posting: Fangraphs Website Desginer

    The position is unpaid and requires the candidate to figure out how to fix the current layout of the FG website, which is terrible and makes the SB Nation design look almost decent in comparison (quite a task).

  7. If you’re seriously interested in getting into a position like this you should apply regardless of the team It’s extremely difficult to get a position like this so you should apply to any and all of them which you see.

  10. I generally support web redesigns, even during continuous uproar. I even like SB Nation!! But the mess of junk at the top you have to scroll down past to get to any content is obnoxious here.

  11. I find fangraphs quite navigable. In contrast, the SB Nation redesign went overboard on pretty pictures and design elements to the point where in became a pain to navigate around the site.

    Maybe it’s just me, but for sites like fangraphs I prefer cleaner design with easy navigation and fewer bells and whistles.

  12. If it makes you feel better, I’m not qualified for the job, either! At some point, I really need to just sit down and learn MySQL (just for personal reasons, I prefer what I’m doing anyway).

  15. The job description does not seem consistent with the job title as intern.

    I wonder what they are paying, and if they can get people for 10 cents on the dollar just for the opportunity to work for a MLB team.
    Hence the title of intern.

  16. To me, though, this is not easy to navigate.

    1. The two “main headlines” at the top are disproportionately massive compared to the rest of the text. They really are gigantic in comparison.
    2. The similar ribbon of gigantic headlines below the main listings is unhelpful. It repeats material which appeared directly above, which adds no value except repetitiveness.
    3. Notes/Audio/Prospects is all precisely the kind of material which I would (with all my love to Carson/Mike/Marc) push to a left-hand or right-hand sidebar. In fact, more generally,
    4. There is an absence of a “navigation philosophy.” That is, as a first-time visitor, I should have some idea how to find what they want. Is every category organized by drop-down menus? Is every category in a list on the left or right? Are categories listed across the top? But on this site design (and, to be fair, on the previous one as well) the answer is “scroll and find out!”
    5. The typeface used in the blog post previews is completely different from, and clashes with, the other typefaces used on the site. The font used in post preview titles is outsized and again does not match.
    6. The house adverts (for the Hardball Times Annual 2013 and for the iPhone app) are embarrassingly simplistic and a step back, plus they introduce serious design issues re: typeface and colour scheme.
    7. Between the gigantic “main headlines” at the top of the page and the start of the main blog well below, I count 60 (SIXTY) article titles with author names, dates, and numbers of comments. This currently includes at least four repeats. I submit to the readership that 60 (sixty) articles linked from the main page is an excessive number. Before you get to the large lined break where detailed section listings begin, the New York Times homepage currently lists just 33 such links.

    As a side note: the Hardball Times Annual 2013 is excellent and I enjoy it tremendously. And you can put that quote in a newly redesigned ad, Appelman.

  21. As much as I truly believe I would be a better GM than several MLB GMs ie Kevin Towers, the ham sandwich running KC, etc, I don’t know mSQL.

    I still think I am smart enough without a B.S. in stat to know that signing victorino for 39m is a bad deal.

  23. Hold on…this is a redesign? I thought my computer crashed halfway through loading the site. Jumble of mess…I’m sure I’ll get used to it and maybe it has its advantages but man is it tough to look at.

  25. A friend of mine interned with the Red Sox a few years ago and was “paid” a monthly stipend of $1,000, equating to 840 or so after taxes. Here we have an organization pulling in ungodly amounts of money – same friend told me they profit $3 million every home game – but Lucchino and the people in finance couldn’t manage to pay interns working 80 hours a week more than $3 an hour. Yay, internships.

  29. Well, they could choose to work there or not work there, correct?

    They were ‘required’ to work 80 hours a week [something like 7a-7p 7 days a week], for $12k per year [below the poverty line]?

    They were not free to quit and get a job elsewhere making minimum wage for 40 hours a week [and the same net pay]?

    And this person, making half of minimum wage for double the normal hours was privy to the nitty gritty bottom line financial data for the team?

    They said ‘profit $3 million every home game’ and not ‘$3M in revenue per home game’?

  31. My overarching point is that the industry is so flush with cash that every team could easily set aside $25k in the budget to pay interns a livable wage.

  33. Believe me, it’s not an obvious known fact to most in the industry. The Reds, for instance, hired a kid with assurances that the job would be full-time following the season, but when the time came they couldn’t come up with $30K to keep him around. Why should they pay more? That’s self-evident after reading the job description posted above. Its an insult for a job with those hours, required skills and responsibilites to fall under the auspices of an internship.

  35. I do understand the whole supply/demand thing, and paying your dues to make it in an incredibly competitive industry. My point, echoed by Keith Law, who actually worked in the game for a few years, is that teams can plenty afford to pay interns a livable wage and *they should do so* because of the incredible demands, responsibilities and exhaustive hours.

  37. So your point is that they should pay more because you are insulted by the alternative. Guess they’ll have to hire someone who isn’t.

    Only when they run out of quality candidates who are not insulted by it will the pay change.

  39. You can drop the “I’m so clever and everything said about economics and business models is stupid and unrealistic if profit margins aren’t maximized” schtick. I get it. We exist in a vacuum and anything to the contrary is stupid. I’ve heard of plenty of internships that – gasp – pay more than federal law requires because someone in finance or baseball ops suggested paying employees, even interns, a livable wage.

    But it’s not economically sensible!!!!!1111 lollllllllllllllllllllllll I’m so smart Internet message board wooooo me

  40. They should pay more because they’d get much better applicants. The rate of pay they’re offerning pretty much guarantees that they get poor ones.

    That, and in the industry we’re talking about, good statistics people can make you millions.

  41. I have this same internship right now for another team. Get paid minimum wage and have no problem with it, but then again I am fairly well-versed in supply and demand.
