  1. If he’s a former SS, is Montero really a good comp? Assuming he’s 6’1″, 205 like his page says (which is, admittedly, always questionable), he’s built a lot more like Hundley or Lucroy than he is a beast like Montero.

  2. It’s not a comp.

  3. Good article. It’s refreshing to hear in-depth of lesser known players, especially if the player’s personality makes him easy to root for.

  4. Wrong word, but it reads like you’re comparing Mathisen’s catching skillset/general athleticism to Montero’s.

  5. Not for me. It’s saying if Montero can catch, then anybody has a chance. There’s no comparison of the two whatsoever in terms of frame, athleticism, or anything else other than their struggles defensively.

  6. Thanks Rob. I generally write about bigger name guys and had planned on including Mathisen in a piece about multiple Pirates prospects. With interviews, I felt it worked better as an individual piece.

  7. Wow. Troubling video of the hitting mechanics. In HS he had a high leg lift that was going to have to be toned down, but he hit from a spread stance (think poor man’s Mesoraco) and he kept his hands back even as he drifted forward too much. The swing had a little too much sweep too it, but there was something to work with. This is a nightmare. He’s completely dead in the lower half. I have no idea what the Pirates have done here.
