  1. Excellent! The more college baseball coverage, the better. I assume you’re just going to be focusing on 2010 prospects as Mikie Mahtook didn’t get a mention?

  2. What kind of prospect is Anthony Rendon? His Freshman year looks just about as impressive as any season from top college bats in recent years – almost as good as Alex Gordon’s JUNIOR season. I know he’s currently rated as the top bat in the 2011 class, but how do you think he compares to other recent top college bats like Alvarez, Ackley, Longoria, Gordon, etc.?

  3. Yes, for now I’ll be focusing only on that. But an article on the 2011 crop probably is in the future, too. Let me know what you guys want from this space, and I’ll do my best to provide it.

  4. I’ll say this, and probably incite a riot from fan boys: I’d rather have Anthony Rendon than Bryce Harper. I would rather have Anthony Rendon than Dustin Ackley. I’m not comfortable talking about him vs. Alex Gordon … I just don’t have a great handle on that. But he’s further along than Longoria was at this stage, certainly.

He’s very good. More about him, I promise.

  5. Interested to hear reports on Renaudo’s 3rd pitch. I was a little surprised at the end of last season to hear he was such a huge draft prospect, just because he was really a fastball slider guy. Having even a projectable 3rd pitch to use against lefties would be huge. Fingers crossed that the idiots over at the NCAA selection committee don’t decide to make Rice/LSU the marquee super regional matchup again (grumble, grumble).

Funny. As a Rice grad (and New Orleans resident), I was going to be nice and polite and thank Bryan for his continuing excellent coverage of the college game, but bypass any mention of Rice or Rendon (this time). So thanks JH!

Things that excite me about Rendon that you might not necessarily pick-up from elsewhere: Wayne Graham (head coach at Rice) and everyone else at Rice absolutely rave about Rendon’s defense at 3rd; Rendon’s K/BB ratio in fallball against Rice pitching was 2/15 (not a typo, his own teammates were apparently terrified to thow him strikes and he was patient); Rendon and Chuck Norris met in a dark alley last week. Rendon went 2/2 with a BB in an intrasquad game yesterday. Has anyone seen Chuck Norris lately?

  6. Small sample size caveat, but in last year’s super regional Rendon was 2/3 off Ranaudo with a single, double, and reached by error. The rest of Rice’s very good lineup went 3/27 with 0 BB and 9 K’s.
