  1. Cool blurb on Gomes, who is a monster homerun hitter. A quick fact check though; his brother, Joey, is actually older by a year and was drafted before Jonny. Funny thing is that growing up he was actually a much better ballplayer than Jonny too; I remember his swing was picture perfect and he was more athletic (ie. strong, quick, fast).

  2. Shrugged off a heart attack? Take that, David Eckstein!

  3. You’re underselling the fact that he’s awesome. Really.

Most of us have had jobs which require(d) us to deal with other people. Jerks make us not want to work. Awesome co-workers make us better workers.

Why do we assume that baseball players are any different?

  4. Joey Gomes is actually Jonny’s older brother. Joey was drafted a year later, but he was a college senior while Jonny only did one year of junior college.

  5. Jonny did 2 years of juco, not one, but the coach there said Joey was the real player. I think Joey had some arm trouble. Those two in the middle of the line-up in high school, they used to mash. To this day, Jonny has hit the furthest homerun I have ever seen. He did it in a tournament were he went 6-12. 6 homeruns, 6 k’s and 6 HBP’s and 6 walks. Typical.

  6. Jonny in the Reds outfield last year had some incredible plays and showed a strong arm. He looks to be in great shape coming into this season. Power hitters tend to strike out a lot. Before people put his defense down and talk so negative about his value in the major leagues – look at the whole picture. Obviously, the author of this article doesn’t know much about Jonny when a basic fact is wrong (which brother is older). The Reds got a great deal in Jonny last year and have now done the same this year and next with the option. Be ready, naysayers, to eat your words!! If given the opportunity to play consistently, Jonny will show all what a great player he really is!!
