  1. Speaking of Yuniesky Betancourt, Baseball Tonight mentioned him as “outstanding defensive player” last night. I puked.

  2. Could reduced speed be responsible for the drastic drop in BABIP? If he’s hitting tons of grounders but unable to leg them out like he could as a younger man, perhaps that limits the rebound potential (especially in light of the horrific knee injury referenced above)?

  3. His straight-line speed from home to first doesn’t look too bad to me, it is really his lateral movement that appears to have been most affected. And his groundballs are almost all weakly hit rollers to second, so not I’m not sure he’s actually been unlucky on grounders.

Anyway, I do hope he gets better, but I’m not too optimistic. You have to remember it is the Pirates, so things can always get worse..

  4. “It’s just so easy to take data like that and completely ignore granularity issues while trying to connect the dots.”

Don’t you mean, “data like *those*”?

  5. Be very worried. He’s a 31 year old average 2B who’s suffered an injury. Players who fit that profile have a strong tendency to disappear from the game.
