  2. His results would be luck if he had not changed his approach. By becoming an ‘extreme ground ball pitcher’ his is relying on a very good infield defense to achieve the low BABIP. Most of the ground balls are easily fielded and he still posts plenty of K’s. Todd Jones was very successful in DET during 2006 and 2007 pitching for ground balls and relying on a good defense and he did not have Valverde’s power or his splitter. As a fan Valverde is a welcome change (and I liked Jonesy) and he is pitching like a league leading closer. It was very fun watching him strike out the heart of the NYY order for the save (May 10th, on May 12th he still got ARod/Texeria/Swisher out but walked Posada inbetween)
