  1. My understanding of the intentional walk was that only the final pitch of the plate appearance needed to be intentional. There are plenty of times where pitchers try to hit the corners or induce swinging strikes out side of the zone for the first few pitches before the manager has the catcher stand up and stick his arm out. So the assumption that 5 IBB equals 20 intentional balls might not hold water.

  2. I think that’s partly accounted for assuming he would throw 10 strikes and 10 balls. One would think he would normally throw ~66% of those 20 pitches for strikes (since that’s his strike rate), so making it half should account for some of the unintentional balls that lead up to the intentional walk, if that makes any sense.

  3. Is it me, or does this article just sort of end abruptly?

  5. I felt the same way. I actually thought at first that it got cut off somehow.

  6. If I’m not mistaken, I believe 2 of Cliff Lee’s walks this year were intentional. Despite that he’s still sporting a 14 to 1 k:b…could be 18:1 though

  7. There we go — it got fixed. Those last few words that were missing actually punctuated the point of the whole article. Without it, I sort of felt like “OK — so what’re you’re trying to say is….?”

  8. Has strike rate (or ball rate) been found to have any predictive value of pitching success? I did a quick and dirty study a few weeks ago and didn’t find any (linear) relationship between strike % and FIP or ERA. I don’t remember all the details as I didn’t think there was anything interesting there, but the fact that you wrote a whole article about strike % makes me wonder if I should have put more effort into my study.
