  1. I think Walker and Alvarez likely have a lot to do with it. If they can hit like the team hopes, it might make a lot of sense for Pittsburgh to move Alvarez to first and Walker to third then see if you can fill 2B from outside. I just don’t see either guy having the range to fill his current position adequately.

  2. I totally thought this would be a piece about the Duke vs. Alabama this weekend.

  3. Would Dennis Green say that Duke is who you thought he was?

  4. Bill, good thought, but what do you do with the corner infield logjam after the Pirates draft Anthony Rendon next year? If you advocate moving Walker to a corner and Alvarez to first, which I don’t disagree is a good idea, you’d have 3 players for 2 positions.

  5. Mike, Walker can also play the outfield if it comes to that. He could also be that super utility guy who plays every day in some position.

  6. Zach Duke?

The man who gave up 255 hits in one season?

One stat matters with the Duke

    1147/947

    1147 Hits in 947 innings
Why is this guy still pitching in the ML?
You could dig up a large group of journeyman AAA starting pitchers and I am fairly sure AT WORST they could perform at Duke’s current level at what 10% of the cost?

I know the Pirates are to defense as Rob Deer was to contact, but at some point you need to be able to miss a bat every now and then.

Pull the plug on this clown.

  8. …starters who don’t miss bats and fielders with limited range go together like oil and water fire and gasoline.

    FTFY.
