  1. ugh, makes me hate being a Cub fan.
Fernando Perez is kinda fascinating too though…being a published poet and all.

  2. In my experience, this is incredibly rare.

In college, I was amazed at just how little baseball stats, both historical and the calculations of, my teammates knew.

I’m not talking about being able to calculate SLG, but not knowing things like the single season record for SBs, HRs (before ’98), etc.

Compared that to me reading The Sporting News (when they’d print all the box scores form the previous week) from 2nd grade on.

In the end, the players don’t really need to know this information, but I think it’s cool when they do. The coaches, managers, front-office should be required to know this information.

  3. Oh my, yes. You’ll love Fernando Perez. Possibly my favorite interview ever.

  4. I love Perez too but unfortunately with his MLB line he might be baseball’s most fascinating 5th outfielder.

  5. You’ll love him. Nando is one of the classiest people around.

  6. Oh, definitely. Met him only once, but I’m a huge fan. Not only is he an excellent poet, he’s also well-read, clever, articulate, and kind.

  7. We get it, you like the Rays.

    just kidding.

  8. If Sam Fuld can replicate his 2009 for a full season, he can be best third OF on all of baseball.

    Comment by Kampfer — January 12, 2011 @ 1:18 pm

  9. what about Will Venable? Bill James is projecting him like a 4th OF but I think he’s going to shine.

    lemme know what ya’ll think

  10. I will miss Perez with all my heart. As a Cub, he’s now bound to melt away in a pool poetic misery.

    Comment by Bradley Woodrum — January 12, 2011 @ 1:46 pm

  11. Oh sure, if Venable’s relegated to the bench, that’s a very good 4th OF.

    Comment by Jonah Keri — January 12, 2011 @ 1:52 pm

  12. And if Sam Fuld can replicate his 2010 season, he’ll be the worst fourth OF in AAA

  13. Not only that, but he’s a pretty decent actor as well.

  14. Not quite the same, but my girlfriend was telling me yesterday about some questions that were asked at Trivia Night at the local bar by my college. One question was “Who was the famous Pittsburgh Pirate that died in a plane crash?” which some people got wrong (ok, you need to be a decent baseball fan to know it was Roberto Clemente). But another question was “Who was the first black baseball player?” and apparently two teams got that question wrong! One team answered Barry Bonds, another answered Harriet Tubman (this team was likely just having some fun).

  15. Welp, after Kila + Jake Fox it looks like we have a new posterboy for the FanGraphs jinx.

Nice work FG, you’ve got a long way to go before you reach SI jinx levels, but are doing a bangup job otherwise :)

  16. He can’t.

  17. Being a cubs fan and someone who would read this site requires the same sort of church and state mentality.

    Comment by cjett — January 12, 2011 @ 6:08 pm

  18. Yeah, if you stretch his 09 numbers over 600 PAs, he would have like 11 RBIs

I know, I know, rbis are meaningless. I must be stuck in the 80’s

  19. Sam Fuld isn’t good at his career, AKA baseball. Their is really nothing fascinating about him except the fact that a good team actually wanted to trade for him!

  21. Does this mean Jonah’s pod will supplant Fangraphs Audio? Annoying as it was to have two identical pods DL’d to my computer, it was worth it for the upgrade from Carson to Jonah.

  22. Touche. Still possible to be a fan and not aligned with your team’s (lack of) thinking.
