  1. Opens a spot for Cashner hopefully. Was never a big fan but it will be interesting to see the effect if any that Larry Rothschild had on the pitching staff.

  2. Makes me wonder how many other pitching coaches tried to get him to throw a change or similar pitch that could take hitters off of the fastball?

  3. He might be OK in the NL east but the AL east? That could get ugly.

  4. Please, Hendry, trade him for anything or trade him for nothing. Just, please, trade him ASAP.

  5. When I hear about Carlos Silva, all I can think of are the stories of him at In-N-Out Burger at spring training when he was with the Mariners.

  6. I was just gonna say– losing Silva wouldn’t necessarily mean Looper or God forbid James Russell getting a rotation spot. Hell, I’d rather see Casey Coleman get the spot before either of those two, even if he’d only be keeping the seat warm for Andrew Cashner, who would probably just get the job outright.

To me, the idea that Russell is even a halfway viable candidate to start is just a bad joke. I wish no one would even include his name in the discussion.

  7. I guess some salary relief would be nice, but the Cubs shouldn’t necessarily be desperate to find a taker for him. You could do far worse than guy like Silva for your #5 spot in the NL. Guy just doesn’t walk anyone, and if you can pull that trick, you can pitch in the NL.

  8. I don’t care how desperate the Yankees are, they can’t be giving Silva really serious consideration. He would get absolutely torched in the AL. The Nationals I can maybe see, but this wouldn’t solve anything for the Yankees.

  9. Doesn’t make sense for the Nats either unless a Cub prospect is also involved and they’re really worried about someone like Detwiler’s options. Also, Lannan has pitched 182, 206 and 184 innings in the last three years, he’s plenty durable. Zimmermann will be limited after TJ surgery, but they plenty of arms in the depth chart with a chance of being better Silva this year, never mind in the future, and should be able to give someone worth looking at those innings in September if they have to shut him down. Unless Gorzelanny is awful it’ll be him as the fifth starter after Livo, Lannan, Marquis, and Zimmermann. Detwiler has looked really good and could push for a spot since he’s out of options, but Silva would be an awful return for him.

  10. carlos silva is both literally and figuratively the fat ugly girl at the party who makes her friends look better. then again, so are colon and garcia (aj burnett is starting to look pretty hot).

  11. Todd Wellemeyer has his moments. For the 1/5 of the time when he’s pitching and pitching well, he’s pretty fun to watch. He was good in ’08 and great that year when LaRussa wasn’t pitching him on short rest or pitching him hurt.

  12. I am a Nats fan and think JD Martin is better than Silva.

  14. If either of these teams is seriously considering Carlos Silva, the Braves would offer them a heck of a deal on Kenshin Kawakami.

  15. The Nats must have been able to cancel an option on Detwiler then, because 2010 would have been his fourth year.
