  1. Venters threw a ridiculously nasty pitch that I believe was a two seam fastball to Fielder tonight in the 8th inning to open the at bat. Fielder looked dumbfounded at what the pitch was. It was impressive.

  2. And Boyer came up in the Braves organization, by the way…

  3. Venters is even nastier than Kimbrel, that weird delivery obviously confuses some hitters. Combined with the downward movement on all his pitches, that makes him almost unhittable. The Braves are being very smart keeping him out of the closer’s role, to maximize his leverage opportunities. I think a couple of teams have figured out the closer’s role is overrated, and are really using their best bullpen arm in the 7th/8th inning, depending on matchup.

  4. Don’t give Fredi Gonzalez that much credit.

  5. Maybe they have. But I doubt Fredi Gonzalez is one of those people.

  7. Trust me when I say that Fredi does not know what a high leverage situation is. This Fredi Gonzalez bullpen flow chart is remarkably (and sadly) accurate: http://i51.tinypic.com/wrb9jc.png

  9. The lefty power sinker! One of the rarest pitches I’ve ever encountered.

Someone at some point said one of the young lefty starter prospects was throwing it, but the only one I know for sure who throws it is Venters.

  11. LOL…my favorite is the one that leads to Sherrill pitching to the left-handed starting pitcher.

  12. Oops…meant to be a reply to Tommy’s bullpen chart.

  14. He’s brought in Sherrill to face just the lefty hitting pitcher twice already as far as I can remember. Like I said, remarkably (and sadly) accurate! Especially as a Braves fan.
