  3. Great article, I think there is also something to be said for that 19 inning loss. During this stretch of terrible baseball the pirates have played they have also lost several games on the opposing teams last at bat….god damn that 19-inning game…

  4. The Pirates should not be “indemnified”? Huh?

  5. I didn’t want to be the first to say it, and I’m not even a Pirates fan.

  7. Great article. As you said, Neal Huntington should be applauded for what he did at the deadline. The buccos have some great pieces in place for the future with Neil Walker, Pedro, and the best centerfielder in baseball Andrew Mccutchen. Hopefully Pedro can figure things out, and Jameson Tallion lives up to expectations. I think with a good offseason and some quality signings, the buccos should have no problem next year breaking the .500 barrier.

  8. Just a note: it’s been reported (and at least tacitly acknowledged by Neal Huntington) that Beltran and Carlos Lee both refused to be traded to the Pirates.

Also, Pence would probably have been a bad acquisition, given his price and his near-certain regression. At best, he’d be the Pirates 3rd-best OF, and it would have cost the team too many prospects.

  9. I was hoping the Pirates would turn it around, I’m a Giants fan and know how it feels to finally turn the corner and win a Championship. If they can finish above .500 it will still be a big step forward.

  10. Its already been a huge step forward, this team won 57 games last year, turning that around to 75 would be a massive one year leap. If not for a ton of injuries to the bats (Tabata, Presley, Alvarez, Doumit, Snyder, etc), who knows if they could have went even further.

  11. It’d be awesome to see the Pirates win 81 games or more this year.

  12. It’s a damn shame that they gave up 3 runs in the final two games of the Milwaukee series yet lost both games. Just seems like the pitching and hitting can’t seem to get on the same page. Charlie Morton has been pitching like a man possessed this past month, he deserves a much better fate.

  15. This. There was a deal in place for Beltran, but he refused to go to the Pirates.

  16. I think it is a step in the right direction that people are actually talking about the Pirates again.
