  1. I do believe you’re missing the one thing that sets Ross apart from these other platoon options: At least per UZR, he can play CF. Sure, he may be a glorified platoon bat, but being able to play a premium defensive position makes him slightly more glorified.

  2. Ironical thing I half-expect: that after blowing a 95+% playoff chance last year, the Red Sox will somehow cash in on a <5% playoff chance this year.

  3. Payroll should be a consideration for the Sox, considering the luxury tax concerns they have.

  4. Andruw Jones also fits well in the category of lefty bashing, cheap alternatives. He’s currently on a 1 year, $2 million contract and is in line to get a similar offer this offseason. I have to imagine he’ll remain in NY though.

  5. One of the things the RS need to get back to is thinking smaller and cheaper. They should’ve traded for Willingham rather than sign CC. He was a much better fit at a much cheaper price. I like Ross, but would trade him now and seek a platoon partner for Kalish on the cheap.

  6. “Unlike Ross, Gomes is viewed as a defensive liability, even though his fielding marks don’t usually back up that assertion.”
What part of a career -13.2 UZR/150 doesn’t back that up?

  7. You forgot Jeff Keppinger, unless you’re assuming the Rays bring him back. I figure another team will give him a bigger deal, but I’ll defer to your brilliance.

  8. I do have to wonder about the rumor that the Braves made him a multi-year offer before this season that he turned down. How much money do you think he made himself with a big year in a high profile city? Probably on the order of $10 million or so.

  9. ross is not suitable to play CF full-time. I think his value there would be less than denorfia

  10. How about Juan Carlos Linares?

  11. Well, getting past unnecessary sarcasm, I was focusing more on outfielders. Keppinger is definitely a platoon option, but I think of him more as an infielder/DH.

  12. I’m pretty sure Denorfia can play CF at least as well as Ross. He’s also from Southington, Conn., hometown of Rob Dibble and Carl Pavano. :)
