  1. Okay now you have me googling Emil(e) Cioran and devouring all I can. But I cannot locate the essay on the apostle Paul, which I very much want to read. Have you any links or book titles?

  2. It’s from a long essay called “Rages and Resignations”. I have it in a collection called The Temptation to Exist.

I haven’t read him extensively. His positions are occasionally bananas, but his prose is spirited and compact.

  3. If NERD is the result of an attempt to represent numerically the likely aesthetic appeal of a pitcher, and Joe Blanton’s NERD is 8 out of 10, than the aesthetic philosophy of fangraphs would make Jean-François Lyotard proud. “[Watching Blanton] will please only by causing pain.”

  4. My thanks! It is even in Kindle edition. In my Googling I especially enjoyed his quip that the only successful argument for a divine creation is the music of Bach – which does encapsulate your view that Cioran may not be a fount of wisdom but that he says interesting things and says them interestingly. That is all I require of an author, sometimes.

  6. The Dodgers have a Team NERD of 1.
Joe Blanton has a NERD of 8.
