BtB Sabermetric Awards

Over the past few weeks Beyond the Box Score has been conducting their first annual Sabermetric Writing Awards and here at FanGraphs, we’re honored that our work was so well received considering all the other great baseball research and writing this year.

FanGraphs took home the award for Best Online Recourse and took second in the Best Sabermetric Research or Writing Website, beaten out only by our friends at The Hardball Times

For the individual writer awards, our very own Dave Cameron took home awards for Best Commentary Article and Best Sabermetric Primer or Review Article/Series.

Dave Allen won the award Best Applied Research Article/Project for his multiple articles on Run Value by Pitch Type and Location, which can all be found at Baseball Analysts. And in the same category Matt Klaassen finished fourth with his article on the “little things” for 2008. The 2009 version of the article can be found here on FanGraphs.

Award winning aside, the whole nomination process definitely brought a lot of the year’s best baseball research and writing to the forefront and it’s worth checking out all the nominations in each category if you haven’t already.

You guys totally deserve this kind of recognition. This is hands down my favorite site for general sabermetric baseball analysis.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the link, David. There’s still one more category to be announced, which will happen as soon as I can get the post written! :)

Two more FanGraphers appeared in the final category: Dave Allen and Dave Cameron. And Tom Tango, who certainly makes appearances here as well, took first place overall.

How was the awards banquet? I wish I could have been there. I would have watched it on TV, but it’s just not the same sitting through overly long speeches and the endless commercials. There’s nothing like being there in person.

Did they get Beyonce to perform? God, I hope Kanye West wasn’t there.

The spread was nice, but I’ve seen better. A few people dropped by and accepted their Sabers, we were honored to have them there. Kanye was not in attendance. JinAZ tried to book Beyonce, but the best we got was the third girl in that group she was in that no one remembers anymore. She was OK.

Also, the women were all over Dave Cameron, so I didn’t get a chance to introduce myself and pander for a job at FanGraphs. Such is the life of a sabermetric rock star.

I thought I had Ke$ha, but she didn’t show. She texted me, something about a party not stopping.

They probably SHOULD have called it “Best online Recourse.” So many people on message boards flee here for protection, these days.

Good work! You deserve the recognition for your hard, earnest work–as do many of the commentators who prod you to refine your analyses, prick you when you’re wrong, and inspire you to do more and be more exact. Sites like this keep me happy during the cold months.

Awesome guys.

Fangraphs was mentioned as part of a segment on MLB Network’s Hot Stove tonight dealing with O and Z-swing.

This place is by far my favorite site on the internet not related to the specific teams I root for

Never commented before, but I’ve got to say congratulations! Great work guys, I’ve checked it almost every day for close to two years. Keep it up! We’re all a little smarter because of you guys.
