Paul Swydan: Hi everybody!
Jeff Zimmerman and I will be here to entertain all of your baseball-related queries. Chris Cwik will NOT be here, something about preparing to get married this weekend. I don’t know, sounds suspect.
Anyway, get in your questions. As a tribute to Chris, we’ll be running some polls on your favorite movie with a wedding scene. There’s tons, so don’t be mad if I don’t pick yours. Or, be mad if you want, it’s up to you really.
See you soon!
|
| 8:45 |
Paul Swydan: We’ll start in 15 minutes. By the way, if you have a tasteful message of good luck — or of warning — for Chris, drop it in the comments, and we’ll run them at the end of the chat!
|
| 9:01 |
Paul Swydan: Hi guys. Let’s get started. Jeff will be along shortly.
|
| 9:02 |
Comment From TimWould you trade A.Jones and P.Corbin for M.Trout?
|
| 9:03 |
Paul Swydan: Probably. I like all three players, but if you’re going for it, I like the gamble on Trout.
|

Comment From asdfasdfWould you bench Cishek for David Hernandez now that the Marlins are going with a committee? Thanks

Jeff Sullivan: And we begin at my customary three minutes after the hour!
|
| 9:03 |
Jeff Sullivan: Usual notes: the queue is very busy so don’t be offended if I don’t get to your question. I don’t know much of anything at all about fantasy baseball so asker beware. I’m going to try to cut this off after an hour instead of 100 minutes because today is unusually busy.
|
| 9:04 |
Jeff Sullivan: Onward, friendly chatters
|
| 9:04 |
Comment From Chris
Patrick Corbin has a .246 BABIP, 88% LOB, 3.9% HR/FB, and an xFIP of 3.59, yet Keith Law said on Twitter that he was legit. What are us normal folks missing on him?
|
| 9:04 |
Jeff Sullivan: I’m going to be writing about Corbin a little later today! More investigating to be done, but his slider looks to be incredible against both handedness…es.
|
| 9:05 |
Jeff Sullivan: Corbin shouldn’t strike anyone as an ace in the making, but he looks to be a legitimate above-average starter, as Law might have been implying.

Comment From zackHomer Bailey or Lance Lynn rest of season?

Dan Szymborski: Irish Creme by a sip.
|
| 12:03 |
Comment From TimCan you explain why HBP and BB have different weights in wOBA?
|
| 12:03 |
Dan Szymborski: It’s from historical data. Most likely is that HBP is more random — some unintentional walks are going to be “partly” intentional and those “partly” intentional walks are, on average, going to be given in slightly lower leverage situations.
|
| 12:04 |
Comment From RayCurious as to what you expect from Grandal once he comes back. I did not see ZiPS on his player page. Would you expect more of the same as last year or would you discount his offense as a result of the positive PED test?

JD Sussman: Hey everyone, sorry for running a few minutes late. I know you’re thrilled that Mike will not be joining us. Post questions!
|
| 12:42 |
Comment From LarryADo you take Roto Questions?
|
| 12:43 |
JD Sussman: Whatever your heart desires, LarryA. Though, like Mike, I’ll only take questions on guys I’ve seen or guys I’ve heard a good deal about.
|
| 12:43 |
Comment From TKI know he’s repeating low A but is Rossell Herrera playing his way back into relevance? Top 100 guy down the road? Position?
|
| 12:44 |
JD Sussman: I’d bet on Herrera’s tools. I need to cut the video of him from spring training, but he’s a LONG athletic kid. Really love what he was doing from the left side. I just took him in a deep 14 team league, and I’d advise grabbing him. But, he isn’t a SS.
|
| 12:44 |
Comment From OJonesRoman Quinn had a little hot streak last week but has fallen back a bit. I know Mike was very high on him through the offseason, do you see him starting to perform to Mike’s lofty expectations?

Dave Cameron: The queue is now open, so go ahead and get your questions in.
|
| 11:59 |
Comment From zackDo you have any concerns about Strasburg other than the fact that he is a pitcher and could get hurt at any time for no reason?
|

Dave Cameron: No, I don’t think there’s any reason to be any more concerned than usual.
|

Comment From BenzedrineDoes Derek Dietrich get the starting nod the rest of the season?

Paul Swydan: Hi everybody!
For the second straight week, I am flying solo, because both Chris and Jeff will be watching live baseball in stadiums. It’s almost like they don’t like you guys anymore. But I still love you, so join me tonight at 9 pm ET, and I’ll cram some baseball down your cramhole.
Get your questions in and I’ll see you soon!

Paul Swydan: Nope. I think the AL East is still a five-team race. Not ready to even declare the Blue Jays dead and buried. Maybe in a couple more weeks though…

Jeff Sullivan: Okay, weird CiL hiccup. Uhhhh this has not been a very promising start

Jeff Sullivan: Let’s turn to the audience for questions!
|
| 9:07 |
Comment From Aaron
So the Braves and their strikeouts became a big deal over the weekend as many Braves fans and radio hosts freaked out over a 3 game losing streak to a good team on the road. I know you’ve written on it, but any new thoughts?
|
| 9:09 |
Jeff Sullivan: No new thoughts. The Braves are going to strike out a little more than most teams do, but that’s only one of their characteristics. Why would the strikeouts matter more now, as opposed to when the Braves were 12-1? Why was it fine then, and problematic in May?

|
| 12:01 |
Comment From AaronWhat are your feelings on Braves pitching prospects? Alex Wood has looked GREAT so far. Where do you rank him, Cabrera, Sims, Graham, and so on?
|
| 12:03 |
Mike Newman: I’ve seen all four. Graham and Wood are very good pitching prospects. Not elite, but mid-rotation/high leverage reliever types. As for Sims/Cabrera, I just submitted a piece with HD video on both to FanGraphs.

Dave Cameron: Hey all – we’ll go ahead and get started in 15 minutes, but the queue is now open. Get your questions in now.
|
| 12:00 |
Comment From PeteWhat are your thoughts with regard to swinging at the first pitch as opposed to being more patient at the plate?
|
| 12:01 |
Dave Cameron: If you get a middle-middle fastball, let it loose. There are certainly times when first pitch swinging is the right plan. You shouldn’t be looking to take pitches just to take pitches. The point is to swing at hittable pitches. If you get a first pitch hittable pitch, swing at it.
|
| 12:01 |
Comment From JEBDo you think Tazawa has a chance to take over the closer role? Or do the Sox have too much money in the other guys to keep him in there?
|
| 12:02 |
Dave Cameron: Tazawa’s an extreme fly ball guy, and closers don’t always love putting guys like that in the closer’s role because of their HR problems. But, I think he could hold the job until Bailey’s healthy.

Paul Swydan: Hi everybody!
There’s a 95% chance that I’m flying solo tonight. Chris is definitely not going to be here, and Jeff probably won’t be. So you’re stuck with me and all of my nerdly glory!
Get your questions in, and I’ll be back at 9 p.m. ET to tackle as many of them as I possibly can.
|
| 6:37 |
Paul Swydan: Jeff wants to know – what ballparks do you believe are affected the most by a specific wind direction? Let me know your thoughts and I’ll post them.
|
| 9:01 |
Paul Swydan: Alright, let’s do this thing!
|
| 9:01 |
Comment From Stuck in a SlumpNo one seems to be talking about Scott Feldman, but the guy went 7 innings and limited the Rangers to 3 base runners. In his last four starts he has a 1.63 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP with a 7.5 K/9 rate. Is this for real?
|
| 9:02 |
Paul Swydan: Well, he’s not good enough to consistently post a 1.63 ERA and 0.80 WHIP, but he is an underrated play, and the K/9 could definitely stand up. I like him as a 4th/5th starter in mixed leagues, and even better in NL only leagues.

Comment From eWorried about Hultzen’s should? The mariners said it’s minor, but that’s how things always start. What’s your take?
|
| 12:04 |
: With Hultzen’s awkward mechanics, there’s quite a bit of, “I told you so” speculation happening right now. When I saw Hultzen last season, his mechanics were more across his body than during a pre-draft look. Unfortunately, he was so efficient in a spring training start (3 IP, 30 pitches), that I didn’t have a chance to follow up in Arizona. Not much more to do other than wait and see at this point. the Mariners don’t have a reputation for hiding injuries or anything.
|
| 12:04 |
Comment From MattConcerned at all about Bogaerts’ law of power thus far? The rest of his numbers seem alright, although his K rate is a tad worrisome. Thoughts?
|
| 12:05 |
: He’s young and still developing, so I’m not worried. I’m convinced his playing for the Netherlands, combined with the cold weather April has caused him to get off to a slow start. He’s heating up with the weather and I still consider him to be a top-5 prospect in baseball entering 2014.

Comment From Joel Is there anyone in the Angels organization who is telling Josh Hamilton to stop swinging at everything, and if so, why won’t he listen? |
| 12:02 |
Dave Cameron: It’s the million dollar question, right? It’s possible that it’s a physical issue of pitch recognition, so we should leave open the possibility that this is Hamilton trying to be selective, but yeah, it seems odd that he keeps hacking away despite pitchers hardly ever throwing him a strike. |
| 12:02 |
Comment From zack Does Tim Hudson have a legitimate hall of fame case? He has the same ERA+ as John Smoltz. |
