We’ve updated our WAR Graphs tool to include pitcher comparisons:
It’s also now possible to compare batters and pitchers on the same graph:
The game log section on the player pages will now give you an extra line of data that displays the totals for the dates you selected.
For instance, if you wanted to see all of Mike Trout’s games since September 1st, 2013, you’d see he’s had a wRC+ of 172 over that same time period.
This feature is available for the minor league game logs too.
There are now splits options on the FanGraphs leaderboards that allow you to see exactly how a player performed at an individual position. These positional splits also include a Value tab, so you can see a player’s WAR totals and components at a specific position.
Please note that these are different from the existing positional filters, which filter on qualified players (25% of games played) at a particular position. The new splits will only show the stats for a player while he was playing a specific position.
For every game this year we’ll be projecting the odds of each team winning on our live scoreboard. We’ve also added an extra experimental line on live Win Probability graphs that adjusts for the newly calculated game odds.
To calculate these game odds we’re doing the following:
Inside Edge scouts watch every play and grade how easy or difficult it is to successfully field on the following scale:
We’ve aggregated all the data and made it available for you to peruse on a player-by-player basis:
In addition, this data will be updated nightly during the 2014 season!
With the arrival of the ZiPS projections, we’ve updated our depth charts and projected standings to be a combination of both ZiPS and Steamer projections. Additionally, our playoff odds are now computed using a combination of both ZiPS and Steamer.
The rules are simple. We take all the FanGraphs+ player profiles, removed the player’s name from said profile, and you have to guess whose profile it is. Your goal is to correctly guess as many in a row as possible. You have 60 seconds per round and you can guess incorrectly once each round. If you do exceptionally well, your guessing streak is recorded in the leaderboards so all can see that you are indeed awesome.
If you are already a FanGraphs+ subscriber and you get the answer wrong, you will be told the correct answer. However, if you are not a FanGraphs+ subscriber, you will be forever left wondering….
The 2014 FAN Projection ballots are now open!
Before you can project any players, you’ll have to select the team you follow most closely towards the top of the screen. If you really don’t follow a team, just pick one. You’ll only have to do this once.
After you’ve selected a team, there are 9 categories for pitchers and 10 categories for position players. Pick the values in the drop-down boxes closest to what you think the player will do in 2014, hit the submit button and you’re done! If you made a mistake, you can always go back and change your selection at any time.
Please note that everything this year is a rate stat. You’re projecting 2B+3B, HR, SB, and Fielding as a measure of 150 games (basically a full season). The player’s previous stats are shown per 150 games in the projection ballot too. This will make changing playing time projections much easier as you’ll only have to change the games played portion.
That’s really all there is to it. You can filter players by team, or if you go to the player pages, you can project players individually. If you want to see all the players you’ve projected, you can click on the “My Rankings” button which will show you only what you specifically projected a player to do.
Fan Projections will show up on the player pages after there have been 5 ballots submitted.
If you do notice any issues, please let us know.
There are a variety of different spray charts available and a number of filtering options for each. A little tip is you can click on any of the items in the legend to make them disappear / reappear on the chart.
Be sure to take a moment and fill out a ballot for this year’s Fan’s Scouting Report!
We end up displaying the results on FanGraphs each year, so your participation is much appreciated!
FanGraphs will be not be accessible for about 2 hours sometime between 12:00am ET and 5:00am ET this morning (July 22nd) for server maintenance.
We’ve updated the site with 2013 park factors, which you can see on our FanGraphs Guts! page. These will be updated daily for the rest of the season and we will have the more granular park factors for 2013 updated shortly (on a weekly basis) as well.
To explain a little more about our park factors, we use up to 5 years of data to calculate park factors using Patriot’s method. When a park makes significant changes to their layout, or it is just a brand new park, we use only data from the changed or new park.
In the case of Safeco Field and PETCO Park, which had significant fence movement, we are only using 2013 data to calculate the park factors. With just this season’s worth of data, the park factors for these parks are being heavily regressed (90% towards 100, a neutral park).
Yesterday we rolled out our brand new depth charts and standings, and since then there’s a few things that have been added:
– Full injury information is now available in the depth charts. You can find out more about the injury if you hover over the little medical icon. This is updated in real time as soon as the injury information becomes available to us.
– On the Standings page, things are now broken out by division. We’ll be adding AL and NL only tables soon.
Daily updated Steamer Projections are now available in the player pages and the projections pages. These come in both the Rest of Season (RoS) and Updated variety. RoS is the projection for only the remainder of the season, while Updated is the forecast for the player’s final season line, including his performance to date.
One thing to note about the daily updated Steamer projections is that a full new projection for each player is calculated each day of the season, the same way the pre-season calculations are calculated, just including this year’s data.
Much thanks goes out to Jared Cross, Dash Davidson, and Peter Rosenbloom for putting these together.
Live stats are now available in the leaderboards!
At long last, one whim of Carson Cistulli’s is now available on FanGraphs!
In the leaderboards, you can now view just yesterday’s stats!
On our live scoreboard page we now have each game’s lineup for the day. This information from now on should be available as soon as the teams announce their lineups each day, usually many hours before the game.
We’re also now using this same data to power the “Starter” field in FanGraphs: The Game, so you should know if a player is in the lineup much sooner than before.
If you think things are delayed, or there’s no lineup for a game where you think there should be, please let us know!
We’ve already got the ball rolling by entering about 300 contracts, but there’s still a lot of work to do. Our staff will of course continue to enter in contract data, but if you want to speed up the project you can help us by entering in missing contract data.
Any contract data you enter will be sent for approval to an editor. Assuming the contract data is correct and mostly complete with proper attribution, it will shortly appear on the player pages along with attribution to your FanGraphs username.
The Steamer projections on FanGraphs use the playing time projections from the FAN projections.
Huge thanks to Jared Cross, Dash Davidson, and Peter Rosenbloom; the team behind the Steamer projections.
Update: FIP, HR, and BABIP columns should now be corrected. There was some bad data cached.
