Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: A.J. Burnett

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market.

Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each free agent is likely to receive, FanGraphs is also requesting that readers make note of how much they’d pay each free agent were they, themselves, actual GMs.

In this edition: A.J. Burnett.

Some relevant information regarding Burnett:

  • Has averaged 195.1 IP and 2.7 WAR over last three seasons.
  • Has averaged 2.5 WAR per 180 IP over last three seasons.

  • Is entering his age-37 season.

I think he will get about 10mil a year, but as a GM, I wouldn’t offer him a contract at any price. NO interest in him at all.

  2. He’s going to retire. Mad about not getting game 5.

Yeah, that would be consistent with his incredible fire and drive, come on. He’s a grown man, not a petulant child.

2 years $24 million to stay in Pittsburgh.

He may be a grown man, but as a Pirate fan I’m glad he has the better part of a month to cool off. He was definitely pissed he didn’t get the all, and as grown men to he IS a bit of a brat.

I think the ideal situation is to go year-to-year with him, but what else is new. I worry that if it starts to go downhill 25% of the way into a two year deal, he’ll just say “whatever, I’m ready to retire anyway”, and we’ll be stuck with the NYY version.

  4. Jim Price says:

He’s an interesting player if nothing else. Who would’ve thought when he signed that 5 yr $80+ mill deal that he’d actually be worth it in yr 5 of the contract? He might get $10 mill.

A highly incentive-laden one-year deal with a team option for a second year. Max $12MM.

    2/20 or 1/12.

  7. Sivart says:

I said he’ll get 3/$36, and I’d give him 3/$36… wow my perception must be a little bit off. He’s been a fairly consistent 2-3 WAR pitcher, sure there is an age risk, but I like him at that price (hypothetical GM of course). He’s got a worse rep than he probably deserves.
