Selected Wisdom of the Corey Kluber Society
The Purpose of This Post
The purpose of this post is to announce a meeting — in this case, at 7:05pm ET today (Monday) — of the Corey Kluber Society.

About the Society
The Corey Kluber Society (or, frequently just “the Society”) is composed of individuals all bound by their singular enthusiasm for the works and days of Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber.

How to Attend a Meeting
To attend a meeting of the Society, one needs merely — while watching Corey Kluber pitch — one needs merely to ask, “How might I do spiritually what Corey Kluber does physically?”

Regarding Corey Kluber, A Statistical Update
Among the 102 pitchers with 100-plus innings thrown this season, Corey Kluber has recorded the 23rd-highest strikeout rate (23.2%), the 27th-lowest walk rate (5.5%), and the 47th-highest ground-ball rate (45.7%). Despite a precisely league-average park-adjusted ERA, he’s posted the 29th-best park-adjusted FIP (86 FIP-) and seventh-best park-adjusted xFIP (76 xFIP-) — a figure (that last one) better than those produced by, for example, the very talented Jose Fernandez (81) and Clayton Kershaw (78) and Anibal Sanchez (77).

A Brief Review of Kluber’s Last Start
In his most recent start, Kluber conceded three earned runs over 8.2 innings, was removed from the game after 95 pitches with the score tied 3-3, and witnessed — stoic as Epictetus himself, one imagines, if his (i.e. Kluber’s) mound presence is an indication — witnessed as reliever Cody Allen allowed three baserunners and two more runs.

Kluber likely kept on witnessing, as well, while the Clevelanders tied the game in the ninth inning and won it in the tenth by means of a Carlos Santana home run (box).

Corey Kluber’s Postgame Comments, Probably
Here are Kluber’s comments following Cleveland’s dramatic victory last Wednesday, probably, which comments might most rightly be classified as Wisdom:

This morning, as on all others, I said to myself, “I shall meet with the busybody, the ungrateful, arrogant, deceitful, envious, unsocial. All these things happen to them by reason of their ignorance of what is good and evil. But I who have seen the nature of the good that it is beautiful, and of the bad that it is ugly, and the nature of him who does wrong, that it is akin to me; not [only] of the same blood or seed, but that it participates in [the same] intelligence and [the same] portion of the divinity, I can neither be injured by any of them, for no one can fix on me what is ugly, nor can I be angry with my kinsman, nor hate him. For we are made for co-operation, like feet, like hands, like eyelids, like the rows of the upper and lower teeth. To act against one another, then, is contrary to nature; and it is acting against one another to be vexed and to turn away.”

Action Footage: Kluber’s Slider
Here’s footage of Kluber’s slider — in this case, to strike out Paul Konerko for the second out in the ninth inning of Kluber’s most recent start:

Action Footage: Kluber’s Slider, More Differently
Here’s footage of that same exact pitch — except, in this case, as seen from behind home plate and even more slowly:

Impressive to have both a low walk rate and a high walk rate! (or did you mistype gb%)

If you look around and don’t see anybody starting Corey Kluber, then Corey Kluber is likely starting you.

Kluber is kicking off one heck of a series. Without doing any real research…of the 8 pitchers involved 3 were All Stars and the highest ERA of the bunch is Verlander at 3.88. McAllister has the lowest k/9 this year at 6.4. Cleveland starts 3 GB and the main reason they aren’t closer is Detroit has dominated the series to date. Won 9 of 12 with a +30 run differential.

Kluber v Sanchez
Masterson v Verlander
Salazar v Fister
McAllister v Scherzer

Member of the society here and will be exposing myself* to Kluber tonight, but my fantasy team needs to know whether I should start Kluber(vs DET, vs LAA) or Quintana(vs NYY, vs MIN) this week?

*Spiritually, that is. Exposing myself spiritually.

Ordinarily, commenting on fantasyin Daily Notes, nominally part of FanGraphs, is frowned upon, but the Society is stoic- anger, vituperation, anxiety, scandal are the expression of bad judgment- so here goes:

1. Detroit/LAA are #1 & #5 in scoring runs vs. right handers (albeit Cabrera’s absence queers the numbers).

2. NYY and Min are #25 and #11, respectively, v. lefties (Granderson’s return might mean something or nothing.)

Strange that Greinke registers only a 5 NERD score. He should gain an extra couple points just for his BAT.

Re: Kluber’s comments, probably. Kluber is more Laconic, then Stoic. I imagine this dialogue:

Reporter: You’ve got only 7 wins and a 3.77 ERA, I don’t understand how these fancy stats prove that you’re any good.
Kluber: That is a statement, not a question.
Reporter: OK, What did you tell Francona when he came to get you after 95 pitches and 26 outs?
Kluber: ‘I shall do my duty better by staying here, and in that way the news will be better.’
Reporter: If Texas picks up a game, they can end your wild-card dreams, send you home in crushing disappointment, ruin all Clevelanders lives.
Kluber: If.
Reporter: That’s a little light on content.
Kluber: He who knows how to speak, knows also when.
Reporter: But we BBWA members believe loquacious, boisterous men (e.g., MLB Network “talent”) to be wise, the carefully-spoken (e.g., Jeter, Trout) to be dignified, and the taciturn (Eddie Murray) to be surly and ignorant.
Kluber: What you say is true. I alone of all the professional athletes have learned none of the media’s evil ways.

I really think this Corey Kluber Society should be kept in NotGraphs.

Kluber is in line for the “win.” – statement meant to convey sarcasm – I realize it would be blasphemous otherwise

I own Kluber but at this point am only playing for next year. Makes it a lot easier to enjoy his outings while calmly accepting the Cleveland bullpen’s less than adequate efforts to preserve the fruits of his labors.

Asked without answer before….and again now. What innings limit will the Indians put on him? How many starts/innings do we think he has left? Or are they going to ride him? He’s already 60ish past 2012 total of 63.

Damn Mark, look at his player page. 180+ last year including 120ish in minors. looks like he’s going the distance. Although it looks like Tito won’t let him do it in any one game. His stuff does look nasty though. I like!

Would trading Kluber for Desmond Jennings make sense in a keeper where I’m only playing for next year?

Go for it. It’s pretty easy to find a 3.50 ERA 1.20 WHIP pitcher lurking on the waiver wire these days.

I’ve come to the society to mourn. I thought this may be a place to seek solace for the void that has filled my heart since hearing the awful news last week. Instead, like disciples of tae-bo or scientology, things have gotten dark and so the roaches have scattered.

At least the pure of heart remain, steadfast in our resolve and bouyed by the once and future existence of the society.

K’luber for life.

Kluber will be back and we will indulge in at least 2 more starts. With those 2 starts Kluber will bless my fantasy team and I will take the title. He rewards the faithful.

“Indians starting pitcher Corey Kluber, who has been out due to a finger injury, threw fastballs and changeups off a mound Monday, MLB.com reports. He had no issues.
On Tuesday, Kluber threw his slider and cutter off flat ground as he continues to make progress for the Indians. He could rejoin the Cleveland rotation in early September at this point. ”

FUCK YES!
