FanGraphs+ 2012: Available Now!

FanGraphs+ (formerly The Second Opinion) is now available for just $4.99!

Here’s what you get:

Player Profiles – Over 1100 player profiles written by the FanGraphs and RotoGraphs contributors you’re already familiar with. Available on either the player pages or in blog format.

Articles – 11 in-depth articles to help you win your league:

-Keeper League Prospect & Rookie Strategies
-How to Use PITCHf/x in Your Fantasy League
-Keepr Conundrum: Bryce Harper or Mike Trout
-Improve Your Control and Break Out
-The Difficulty in Predicting Saves
-Valuing Upside Graphically
-Ottoneu Strategies for Every Setting
-Projections and Playing Through Pain
-Mining for Under (and Over) Performers: Strikeouts
-Prospects with Pedigree: Eno’s Rookie Lineup
-The 2nd Annual Cistulli-Sarris Prospect Face-Off Challenge

Quick Opinions – Short one to two sentence profile that give you the bottom line about a player. These are also integrated into our various projection pages so you can quickly get more information about a player.

FanGraphs+ Year Round Content – FanGraphs has partnerned with ESPN Insider again this season and everything we write for ESPN will be available. (2 – 3 articles weekly)

FanGraphs+ Archives – Our previous two year’s worth of FanGraphs+ content will also be available to you.

For those of you wondering, there is no PDF (again) this year. I know we released one sometime in mid-March last year, but I just don’t feel comfortable promising a half-hearted PDF.

The idea of FanGraphs+ is to enhance your FanGraphs online experience and I think for $4.99, it’s really an amazing bargain.

  1. Just a quick note. There’s probably about 10 of you who purchased the 2011 Second Opinion in the past 30 days. I will be refunding your account and giving you free access to FanGraphs+ 2012.

If you purchased The 2011 Second Opinion outside of 30 days, but after the World Series you will be given access to FanGraphs+ 2012

In regards to the pdf, I appreciate your concerns for maintaining a high quality product (I just don’t feel comfortable promising a half-hearted PDF.), but ALL of us want / need a pdf. PLEASE reconsider and put one out for us!

      Thank you.

4.99, is that in dollars or souls? I know the Dark Overlord must feed.

But assuming dollars, consider this a purchase from me.

Yeah 4.99 is pretty steep in souls. The Dark Overlord really needs to raise interest rates, inflation is out of control.

To be honest, after paying for that utterly useless iPhone app last year, I can’t really trust any Fangraphs purchased content.

    • Steve Balboni says:

I was wondering about that App. Does FanGraphs+ 2012 translate well into the App? I don’t want to read that much content sitting in my chair, so printing a .pdf or Ipad friendly is optimal.

Although, I’m buying in any case because its the least we can do for all the freebies (and its $35 cheaper than BP).

I agree. I’d definitely pay $5 for a GOOD fangraphs app with integrated player comments and OFF-LINE stats (like the Baseball Mobile app).

No PDF is a deal-breaker as well.

Rarely have I seen so many people bitch about things that cost so little … FanGraphs+ ($5), App ($3). You must be the same people who complain about lack of 5 star food/service at fast food restaurants.

A Fangraphs+ of 2012? Somehow I doubt that this is 20.12 times better than the average Fangraphs.

I’d require some sabermetric analysis or site native stat before going this route, myself. Maybe something like WAF? Writing for Advanced Fangraphing? I currently have a WAF of 1, if I just read ESPN it’d be a 0, if I could tolerate Bleacher Report my WAF would be -5….

  10. Matt says:

The projections by Bill James and being able to look over career stats is useful but the editors articles aren’t really any good. They are rarely correct in their projections.

Some examples. They predicted David Price to be better than Clayton Kershaw. They then said Clayton Kershaw was never gonna get over his wildness even though he had improved every single year on his WHIP.

I mean seriously editors who can’t even tell signs of improvement? How is that worth paying for? I can get just as bad of predictions on CBS Sports free of charge.

Only a fool would pay for lousy articles written by guys who prolly were rejected as sportswriters on other sites.

I am rather interested in scouting reports like in this website, but more detials:
    http://tsn.ca/mlb/teams/players/bio/?id=3618.
For example for an OF, I’d rather read is he a poor/below average/average/good/great fielder/arm talent and how he handles two strikes and how he behaves himself on the bases then what is the projection for him in HR’s OBP according to previous numbers.

With no PDF, I won’t be buying this. I loved the PDF last year as I threw it on my flash drive and had access to all of the player profiles on my laptop in one spot (and I didn’t need to be connected to the internet to boot).

Really Admiral Whiskers? Do you know how ad revenue works? Do you go to Fangraphs every day and click on each ad you see on every page? I’m honestly curious.

        Vote -1 Vote +1

      • Depends whether Fangraphs ads are pay-per-click, pay-per-impression, or some flat rate. I am guessing the Dark Overlord (praised be his name), in his infinite wisdom, probably operates on all three models.

So, yes, just coming to this site probably makes Fangraphs money.

I screwed up and bought it without reading the very lowly placed statement saying “NO PDF.” Come on! That’s the best thing about it. Flipin’ pages, making notes, and killing the competition at the auction! That’s what it’s all about.

  14. Rich Alan says:

Guys, I hate to b*tch, but this is disappointing. I paid the $4.99 just to support the best baseball blog on the internets. That being said FanGraphs+ is a bit lazy. Wouldn’t it have been prudent to list team and position on the player profiles? What about ’12 projections, shouldn’t you have at least include James’s or Rotowire’s? And call me old school but give me a pdf option, something I can easily access and read when I’m not connected.

Still love you guys, but some updates to FG+ would be most welcome!

    • Thanks for the feedback.

In the past we’ve listed either Fan Projections or Marcels. If you want to see projections those are available on the site along with the quick opinions.

I will look into adding team / position and maybe the fan projections because we probably can’t add Bill James or Rotochamp.

For those interested in making the content available off-line, you may want to check out Readability.

add me to the list of people that would pay $5 or so for a pdf and access to a bonus blog but not as thrilled with the current set.

the one underrated use of the iphone app is the live % charts in game, which is nice the 5-10 times a year I’m at a game. I’d love to improve those for context (ie: a lead with two defensive/pitching minded teams in say petco park means more than some offensive juggernaut matchup in coors field.

Anyway, still not an awful app.

i’d almost donate just becuase i get use out of the site, but id get zero utility out of not having a pdf.

  20. I cut and pasted most of it into a word file last night. (It took longer than I thought because the site loads pretty slow.) So the price was $4.95 plus 1 hour and since I bill out at $450, that’s expensive to get a useful product. But I’m thrilled with my purchase.
