“OK. I’m starting a thread down here because it seems like people are taking what I wrote the wrong way. I’m not indicting sabermetrics or saying DIPS isn’t revolutionary and brilliant. (And I’m not trying to say Fangraphs is worthless.) I love stats. What I am saying is that Aaron Cook (who is having one hell of an oddball statistical season, in a small sample size so far), because of a special talent he has, may not necessarily fit on the DIPS curve. Buehrle and Glavine and others before him didn’t. We’ll know more after 30 innings, obviously, but the model is way bearish on Cook’s 2012, and that has a lot to do with his strikeout rate, and, perhaps, because of his skills, he doesn’t need strikeouts as much as everyone else does. That’s all. Sorry for the misunderstanding.”
