With the A’s RP heavy off-season, I was thinking too it perhaps has to do with the value those players can get at trading deadlines. As they brought up, they can use some of their existing RPs as trade bait and those RPs tend to have more value at the trade deadline. Certainly if we look at the trade market this off-season alot of deals have been guys with potential or prospects traded for relatively unexciting RPs. The Padres have certainly cashed in a number of decent but unexciting relievers for players with potential over the off-season.

I’m thinking maybe Beane signed Balfour and Fuentes for the good old fashioned reason to make the A’s a better team. The analysis made little mention that these are quality pitchers and with their addition the A’s possibly have the best pen in AL.

Dave, just for the record, Aaron Harang joined the Reds in August 2003 when Great American Ballpark was already open. The Reds move to a “homer happy ballpark,” therefore, had no effect on him. Dusty Baker’s abuse of him on the other hand (see May 25, 2008)….

Hope you’re lighting cigars with the $100 bills Gillette paid you for that subtle product placement, Carson.

Yeah I didn’t get the Harang in Great American Ballpark being a potential reason for his slide either, the timing Dave laid out was wrong… Maybe he just got too fat? Has anyone even bothered to watch the guy pitch the last 2 years? He can barely complete his full delievery these days without serious effort to stay upright.

On another note, we need MORE of these podcasts guys! And make them longer! I could have listened to this segment for another 4 hours easy…
