FanGraphs Audio: Dave Cameron Analyzes Baseball, Entirely

Episode 305
Though many have said it couldn’t be done, managing editor Dave Cameron — in this edition of FanGraphs Audio — analyzes baseball, entirely. Of note: reviewing some first principles from Cameron’s 10-best and -worst offseason transaction posts; everything regarding the Felix Hernandez extension; and the Francisco Liriano deal with Pittsburgh, if it’s a bargain in the way the Cubs’ Scott Feldman signing is.

I downloaded the podcast for the first time today and thought the content seemed very promising, but had to stop listening due to the poor audio quality. I am not referring to the over-the-phone sound quality, but the studio recording quality. It sounded like the file had been very compressed after having been recorded and it took me back to the early days of internet audio before people had the bandwidth to handle decent sound quality. I’d recommend compressing to no smaller than 128k. I’ll try it again when the next episode is uploaded. Maybe it was a fluke.

There’s no need for 128kbps quality on a talk show like this, especially when one of the parties is being recorded over skype. 32 kbps is perfectly acceptable and it comes with the benefit of being able to download quickly and store easily.

Go listen to back episodes of the Up and In podcast and tell me quality equipment and a high bitrate don’t sound substantially better. Because it does. Listening to Fangraphs podcasts is an unpleasant experience in terms of audio.

I don’t believe you Dave Cameron saw the way the Liriano deal is structured. His pay is based on how much he pitches. He is only guaranteed 1 million this season an the club has an option for year two. This article has the details.
