I highly recommend either a Ford Focus ST or a Subaru Impreza Hatchback/Outback or a Golf TDI.

You are a college-level English professor Carson, owning a Subaru Outback is practically a requirement.

Fiat stands for Fart In A Tub? Never heard that one. (And apparently the Google machine hasn’t, either.)

  3. I can vouch for the Honda Fit serving just fine in the NH winter (as long as you have snow tires). All-wheel drive is hardly a requisite for winter driving in New England. Also, being a 4-door hatchback, it handles a child rather easily and, I presume, a medium to small dog as well.

Carson, echoing Chito’s comment, my son has driven an AWD Subaru all over NH for the past six winters with no problems, but he has gone snowboarding hundreds of times in all conditions, so his snow driving’s extreme. I live in a snowy part of upstate NY and I do just fine with a FWD VW and snow tires.
