“Can’t really comment on the [ballpark food question] since I’m too cheap to buy food at ballparks”
Darn. I wanted an IchiRoll review.
And I’d probably go with the Salt Lick brisket sandwich in Round Rock.
I disagree with your assessment that the Nationals need one or two more quality starters. Their rotation as it is stands as Strasburg/Zimmermann/Gonzalez/Lannan/Wang. That’s pretty solid in my biased opinion.
You also mentioned that the Nationals would finish with above 83 wins if they added Fielder, but they wouldn’t “contend” — with the second wild card, the 85-90 win range is fair game for the playoffs. And that’s not taking into account a full year from Zimmerman and 160 innings of Strasburg. I’m not arguing that they’re better than the Phillies or the Braves, but they’re not as far as you make them out to be.
Nationals are certainly wild card contenders even without Fielder. They won 80 games last year and only Morse should regress somewhat. Strasburg, Laroche, Werth, Ramos, Espy having better healthy years and the addition of Gio should put the Nats right in on that wild card bubble.
The whole “Angels need a closer” thing is weird to me. Jordan Walden was really good last year.
Walden led the league in blown saves. He had more blown saves than Matt Capps! I understand he is young and has a good k rate but it wouldnt hurt to get another guy in that role. I think if they wait Madson’s price will come down to an acceptable level. Downs as a 7th inning or situational LOOGY, Walden as the 8th inning guy and Madson as the closer looks much more appealing to me.
Maybe the Orioles could trade Adam Jones for Beachy & Prado. Then sign Jose Lopez and flip him for John Danks.
Jones isnt better than Prado. Adam Jones hasnt ever put up an .800OPS, plus he’s less versatile. Braves would be foolish and it would downgrade their offense and pitching staff. Doenst make sense.
Prado, Jurrjens, and a pitching prospect really is too much for Jones. Jones wouldn’t even play CF next year. I’m not sure Prado is the better overall hitter, but his comparable numbers and the fact that he’s more versatile than Jones plays a big part in this.
I wouldn’t trade either Beachy or Prado alone for Adam Jones. The only thing that makes sense would be Jurrjens for prospects and the prospects to the Orioles for Jones. Jurrjens and Jones have almost identical value.
I hear your comments that Adam Jones is a good player… BUT what is he good at????
1) He isn’t good at getting on base….319 career OBP.
2) He isn’t good at stealing bases. 44SB with 20 CS in 624 career games.
3) He isn’t good at CF defense. Rated low by metrics and you state he needs hard work on his reads and jumps.
4) He is not good at hitting for power away from Camden yards. Career .404 SLG percentage away.
5) He is getting better at striking out….
Projections for 2012
Adam Jones .278 .322 .447 22HR, 106 OPS+
Martin Prado .281 .325 .417 12HR 100 OPS+
Why would the Braves make this trade and esp add a starting pitcher to go along with it? Adam Jones is good, but so is Prado.
But Martin Prado can’t play CF. He’s only capable of playing the corner outfield spots, 3B, 2B, and 1B. Braves would have to include Freeman, two of Teheran/Delgado/Minor/Beachy/Jurrjens/Hanson, and either Kimbrel or Venters.
Undocorkscrew, The Braves don’t need Jones to play CF. They have this guy named Michael Bourn who I hear is a pretty good CF. Jones is a poor defensive LF and doesn’t hit well enough to play the corners.
Your proposal is one of the most ridiculous ones I have ever heard. You honestly think Adam Jones is worth Freeman and two of that grouping you mentioned AND one of the young closers. That is a package of players that would get Ryan Braun or Matt Kemp, not a good, but not great, player like Jones.
