FanGraphs San Francisco Meetup — Tonight!
It’s more fun to nerd it up in groups, I promise. You can only shake your fist at the computer so long before you look (and feel) like a crazy person. So, if you are in the bay area, come watch some wild card game wildness with FanGraphs friends and family at the 21st Amendment in Downtown San Francisco any time after four on October 5th. We’ll be upstairs, most likely, but you can always check my twitter feed closer to the event for updates.
Come heckle us, Friday October 5th at the 21st Amendment brewpub:
Eno Sarris, FanGraphs Writer, RotoGraphs Editor
Wendy Thurm, FanGraphs Writer *
Howard Bender, RotoGraphs Writer
Noah Jackson, Former MLB Scout and Founder, First Base Foundation
Patrick Newman, NPB Tracker
Erik Malinowski, Freelance and Deadspin
Steve Berman, Bay Area Sports Guy
Scott Willis, Bay Area Sports Guy and Crazy Crabbers
Hannah Ehrlich, River Avenue Blues *
We’ll see about Wendy and Hannah, as they will be at the A’s wild card game if it’s home. But the rest of us will definitely be hanging out, and there will be some free food and happy hour pricing. If you are under 21, it’s fine, 21A is a brew pub, you can come upstairs and talk with us over cheesy fried things like the rest of us aged baseball nerds, just with a soda in hand.
Thank you for choosing a non-21+ venue. I’ll see if I can make it.
see everyone there.
-[Thinks to self]: “21st Amendment is in SOMA, not downtown.”
-[Pushes up nerd glasses]
-[Resumes feeling smug]
See you there!
SoMa is a part of downtown…
Err, no.
What would you consider downtown?
I’ve lived in SF for 9 years and I consider it downtown, the same way that people would say the ballpark is downtown and north beach is downtown. Milby and fergie seem to think downtown equals financial district, but not everybody would agree with that.
This reminds me of a time when Bill O’Reilly was discussing drugs in SF. He mentioned that every major city has a tenderloin district where people smoke weed on the street, prostitutes are around, etc, and in SF it’s called North Beach. I was thinking “Bill, it’s called the tenderloin, you moron!”
viva! I hope you can make it, would be nice to meet you. Well all of you, but vivaeljeter comments a lot, so it would be interesting to put a face to name.
Also, funny story.
I lived in SF 25 years and downtown was always considered the shopping area around Union Square. The City has changed a lot so maybe younger folks consider most of SF to be downtown now. Google search says Van Ness & Market as center of downtown, ugh.
I would consider Van Ness to be the very outskirts of downtown. I’ve always thought of Market and Montgomery to be the center of downtown, though I might be biased since that’s right where I’ve worked ever since I moved to the Bay Area.
I would say that the majority of people that I know would consider downtown to be the Financial District, Union Square, Civic Center, SoMa, and Chinatown. Maybe North Beach too.
Any thoughts on how late this thing will run? I have an after-work engagement, but I would like to have a chance to laugh at Jeff Francoeur with kindred spirits if this thing is going to last into the evening.
I wish I knew the playoff schedule. If there’s baseball on, we’ll still be there. I’ll update on twitter, and try to update here too.
Sound fun. See you all there!
this is great, because
a. I have no cable
b. I have less friends
c. I’ve yet to find an ideal bar to watch baseball in Berkeley (suggestions?)
excited to watch the 2nd wildcard madness unfold!
Dammit. If I were living in my parents’ basement like a proper stat nerd, I would totally go to this. But alas, I must break stereotypes and have a real job. Lame. This sounds so much more fun.
wait, we’ll be there after five still??
Ha no my job is in Wisconsin. If I didn’t have a job I would be living in my parents’ basement in California.
If the A’s aren’t playing a home game that day, I’ll be there.
I work in SOMA, so I’ll try to make it. But, like JayT, I will be at the A’s game if it’s a home game.
Honestly, Oakland will be playing most likely, and I’m not sure I should be watching that particular game in front of people I’ve just met. I may be at my highest high, my lowest low, my loudest loud, my silentest silent, with crazy mood swings throughout the game. 162 games leading to one all-important game. I’m freaking out just thinking about it!
To each his own, but if there was a crowd that would understand your mood swings, I’d venture it was this one.
If you did this in DC, I’d definitely be there. I’d even take a day off from my day job.
I’ll try to make it. As Ree said, thanks for making it a non 21+ venue.
Looking forward to it.
Hey! Look forward to hanging out again.
Like others here, I look forward to nerding it up – with great beer, to boot! – but plan on being in Oaktown if there’s a game. If there’s an out of town game, though, featuring Oakland, you gotta get the 21st to put it on the tele – even though they’re Giants homers (as is their right, being by AT&T park).
Giants won’t be on tv so they better…
certainly hope to make it. but either way thanks for putting something together in the bay area.
No Cistulli or Jeff Sullivan? Weak
Literally flying into SF that night. BOOOOOOOOO.
Killer! I’m in!
Sorry guys… going to be at the A’s wild card game… OH WAIT, NO I’M NOT.
is carson cistulli there?
Wow…wifey and kids are heading to the in-laws, so I just might be able to make the trip on BART.
Damn, wish I could make it!
Any plans for Giants pre-game tomorrow?
