Any Padres fans out there want to comment on Cabrera’s defense?

Not surprised re. his UZR. Saw him alot this year and would’ve expected worse from a Rule V guy. He makes way too many errors on easy balls. Cabrera is still young and a hard workers so I expect him to improve next year. His range is just OK (you’d expect more from a speedy guy) but his arm is, well, sublime. The Pads signed Eckstein and like him so, barring injury, Cabrera won’t be moving to 2nd. Besides his arm would be wasted there. I predict he’s got a long career ahead of him.

If this is supposed to be a review of the Padres minor league system, I would hardly call Cabrera “The Graduate” since he acquired by Rule 5. He didn’t exactly graduate from their system. Credit the Padres for their good judgment in picking up a useful player, but don’t credit them with his development.

The point of the piece is to examine prospects “who deserve mentioning but probably will not be appearing on their teams’ Top 10 lists” Darnell Forsythe and Castro will likely be in the top 10, although Forsythe had a disappointing second half in double A that might leave him short.

You’re looking at improvement, but among the college hitters taken by the Padres in the 2008 draft, I would put James Darnell over Logan Forsythe over Sawyer Carroll. And keep in mind Allan Dykstra was coming off wrist surgery this season, and his swing was modified. His performance over the last two months of the season and in the post-season was much better.

Based on what I’ve seen from watching him this year, he’s getting by on his acrobatic/athletic ability alone. He is fast and has a cannon of an arm, but makes an unacceptable number of errors on routine plays. Perhaps moving him to second might cut down on the errors a bit, but I’d guess that it’s really the big league inexperience that’s doing it.

Apparently he wants to play winter ball too, but the team is worried that he’s getting tired from so much work. I doubt there are any plans to move him away from SS but if his glovework isn’t improving by this time next year there will likely be concerns.

Any Padres fans out there want to comment on Cabrera’s defense? His UZR/150 is -10 (but usually more than one season is required to get an accurate value). If I remember correctly, Colorado was playing him a lot at second. Are there concerns that he might have to go to second long term?
