Hamilton is a cool story.

But how come hes doing better than when he was in the minors?

Is it possible that he isnt really as good as his first 400 at bats seems?

I’m not sure that the Hamilton/Bruce decision was an either or. There’s no reason the Reds couldn’t have had both Hamilton and Bruce. The Reds would have been better off with those two than holding on to either Dunn or Griffey for a final season before both move on.

I like Volquez’s arm, but there’s a much larger supply of good arm/bad command guys who could be good if they figure everything out than there are of all-star outfielders. Hamilton’s the rarer property, and in my opinion, the more valuable property, which makes this a clear win for Texas.

The Reds could’ve kept Hamilton as an upgrade over Dunn while collecting the comp picks for letting Adam walk.

Then of course there is next year where the Reds will be outfielder-less on the corners….

It’s easy to see Josh being a 5 win over replacement player. It’s not as easy to see Volquez being a 5 win arm.

I share your enthusiam for this trade…”a challenge trade for the ages” is a good way to put it. I maintain that Hamilton is an injury risk and I’d be surprised if he played 150 games. Plenty of risk with Vollquez as well…he still walks too many batters, but if he can somewhat maintain that low LD% and high GB%, particularly in Cincy, he’s going to maintain his value.

I’ll say that ultimately, the deal probably made more sense for the Reds. With elite prospect in Jay Bruce, it made a lot of sense for them to clear some room in the outfield and they could wonder seriously whether Hamilton’s stock would ever be higher. I’m a fan of Josh Hamilton–how can you not be–but Texas doesn’t have anything like Volquez to replace Volquez and the Reds have Bruce. For Texas, this was a fair trade, but for the Reds, well, it looks as though you could wonder whether Hamilton would be better than his particular replacement, Bruce, which is to say, basically, they got Volquez for nothing.
