This kind of stuff is like farting to the cavalry charge of the William Tell overture and claiming it's music.

Without weighing in on Carson's writing as a whole, I will say that the 'ambiguous pronoun followed by parenthetical identification' thing is totally unneccesary and, as a reader, just annoying.

I'm a little late here, but:

The "try easier" issue is just another example of the differences in the declarative/procedural memory types.

Muscle memory is procedural memory. That means it's an automatic, subconscious process. If you try to induce conscious control over those types of memories, you're rerouting the process through the wrong memory system, and you'll likely mess the process up.

The conscious part of the process has to come in advance, in tricking the procedural memory system to automatically do what you want it to do when the time comes.

That's why there's no such thing as clutch, but there is such a thing as choking. You can't make an automatic process any better, but you can avoid "thinking too much", ie sabotaging the automatic responses with improper routing.

Yeah, I kinda like the way he slowly wanders into an article. Plus, he lacks the snarky sans wit style that many articles on this site contain.

I'll jump in with the guys refuting the grouches.

I enjoy the parable like stories, they make the article's design memorable. You guys who don't enjoy this style, and feel a need to whine and slight--that's not too cool. Everything isn't for everyone, take it easy.

I really enjoyed that. Carson, please ignore the haters and keep on Carsoning. That is to say, keep writing like Carson (i.e. with the fun and the tangents and such) as I enjoy your stuff immensely. I've read only one Carson article, but still.*

*Small sample sizes be damned!
