looking at the split graphs, Atkins doesn't really have a career platoon split. it looks to me like last season was an overall bad season for his hitting, but for whatever reason he got really lucky against left handers for the first half or so.

@Jason T
I'm not sure how much more neutral it is. It certainly depresses Ks, which obviously favors offense a lot.

Eric, are the wOBA/wRAA numbers that you used for Atkins park-adjusted?

when "analyzing" Atkins, i think you all left out a VERY important stat. His L/R splits are awful. He hit .357/.414/.600/1.014 vs. lefties while hitting only .265/.302/.408/.710 vs righties. Considering that he took 471 AB's vs R, thats 471 worthless AB's vs R....especially when you consider he plays his home games in Coors. If i were any team, i wouldn't overpay for a 29 year old 3B who sucks at defense and is nothing mroe than a lefty masher.

AM,

I have Atkins at +13 offense, -9 defense, +17 adjustment, +2.5 positional, which comes to +24, for +2.4 WAR.

Wigginton is +6 offense, -5 defense, +15 adjustment, +2 positional, which comes to +18, or +1.8 WAR.

Essentially, Wigginton would be about what Atkins was in 2008, whereas the projections for Atkins in 2009 is a bit sunnier. If the Rockies can convince someone to take Atkins on, then signing Wigginton would mean they don't lose all that much production... however, right now, Atkins' true talent level is better and he is still under control.

So... he's not worth Carlos Carrasco?

In all seriousness, I wonder if Atkins will need to move to 1B or the OF at some point -- which, obviously, will hurt his value even more. I think the Rockies are best served by letting him play out the string and collecting the picks when he leaves; no one's going to meet their inflated asking price for a league average player.

Atkins has been popular name floated around by Twins fans for the last couple of years. Earlier this year the Rockies reportedly asked for Kevin Slowey and Denard Span in return, plus an additional prospect. At a price like that I'm not sure whose plans he would fit into.
