So JJ Putz throws another can of gas on this fire (the larger "how the Mets handle medical issues" fire, not Beltran in particular). Of course it is the NY Post and Putz is no longer with the Mets and he does seem to specialize in Parthian Shots at past employers (something for your wall, JJ?) but this does sound sadly plausible.

I wouldn’t make a Vic/Beltran trade based on cost alone.

Ability wise, Beltran is by far the superior player…though I wouldn’t be stunned if Vic has more value this year if he stays healthy. He’s probably a 4 win player this year.

Yeah, that Kumbaya moment has just convinced me that either Carlos Beltran’s knee is in fact the messiah, or something deeply weird recently happened in Whoville to cause the hearts of Mets and Phillies fans to grow three sizes.

Either way, clearly the world is about to end.

That’s the way it looks to this outsider too. The odd thing is that the NY media, for all its high-hyped dudgeon, can’t seem to see the forest for the trees. If they actually connected the dots and held the team accountable instead of specializing in generalized sturm und drang, they might actually accomplish something beyond selling papers (or at least get somebody banned from the Mets offices).

Meanwhile around here we see the same thing: people (such as in “The Contest” thread) defending Minaya because he couldn’t “predict” the injuries and they “weren’t his fault” — which is of course true of the injuries themselves, but not the way the team has handled them (consistently badly).

Except that we get updated CHONE and ZIPS etc projections before the season starts (and even after, in a couple of cases). So we’ll still be comparing apples-to-apples. In fact, if we don’t allow the fans to modify their projections (or at least add new ones) we’re going to artificially penalize the fan projections (especially since all but the most dedicated of fans won’t bother even if they have the opportunity, so the fan projections will always be polluted by some bogus early data and thus always at a disadvantage).

Though maybe you’d rather have CHONE et al “cheat” by not taking the latest information into account at the season starts.

Yes, but I feel pretty happy about it considering I made that projection pre-scoping. I might try to push it down to 400 PA. More likely, I’ll penalizes the speed components (UZR, SB’s, Avg) a little bit and maybe expect a more patient approach at the plate.

I think about a third of my projections have considerable downward adjustments to playing time due to injury or collapse risk. I don’t know if I’m properly weighing such things, but I sure as hell know that “The Fans” scores aren’t.

Did a Mets fan just agree with a Phillies fan about something? What is this world coming to, please go throw beer (or someother appropriate liquid) at each other.

I think the biggest shame in all this is that the Mets FO let everyone know their frustration with the situation. This should have been handled in house, and not with the media. Maybe that is part of doing business in a large market that they couldn’t keep it hush hush, but they didn’t need to run to the media right away…
