I don't mean to nitpick, but couldn't you say that the Red Sox organizational needs don't include LHP, 2B, and LF? They have one of the better LHP in the AL (Lester), a pretty good 2B (Pedroia), and will probably sign Bay after this year. Sure they could use more of those in the abstract sense that teams can never have enough depth. But I don't really see how they can be singled out as a particular need.

Don't hold me to every piece of data here but I think these are the Sox later round draft picks (2006-2008) who were signed away from college commits for "high pick" money.
Soxprospects.com was my main source.
I'm pretty sure that for 2006-2008, the Sox have outspent all other teams on such players.
And one side note is that they signed no such players in 2005 (all those famous 2005 picks were in first-second rounds):

2006:
Lars Anderson, 1B, 18th round, from California, was committed to Cal-Berkley, 825K.
Ryan Kalish, CF, 9th round, from New Jersey, was committed to UVA, 600K.
Ty Weeden, C, 16th round, from Oklahoma, was committed to Univ. Arkansas, 425K.

2007:
Will Middlebrooks, SS-3B, 5th round, from Texas, was committed to Texas A&M, 925K.
Drake Britton, LHP, 23rd round, from Texas, was committed to Texas A&M, 700K.
David Mailman, OF-1B, 7th round, from North Carolina, was committed to Wake Forest, 550K.
Anthony Rizzo, 1B, 6th round, from Florida, was committed to Florida Atlantic, 325K.
Austin Bailey, RHP, 16th round, from Alabama, was committed to Univ. Alabama, 300K.

2008:
Ryan Westmoreland, CF, 5th round, from Rhode Island, was committed to Vandy, 2 million (over 5 years).
Peter Hissey, CF, 4th round, from Pennsylvania, was committed to UVA, 1 million.
Hunter Cervenka, LHP, 27th round, from Texas, was committed to Univ. Texas, $350K.
Tyler Wilson, RHP, 13th round, from Georgia, was committed to Kennesaw St., $300K.

Yeah... pretty big omission. Someone must have not looked past the 10th round or so...

Agreed. I still dream about how good their 2005 draft was. Ellsbury, Lowrie, Buch, Bowden, and don't forget Exposito.

No mention of Lars in the 2006 draft?

For the 09 draft I think it would be better to list system needs instead of MLB needs.

Two things:

1) How can you leave out the 05 - best draft EVER??

2) Paul Byrd was a type B and if he signs soon (as he says he will) the Sox will get a 2nd rounder for him...
