Logan Schafer is the real deal in the 2008 draft. He is surpassing all the CF’s except for Lo Cain. Caleb Gindl is falling in my mind to Schafer in the overall OF.

I’m in total agreement with battlekow. Lawrie, from when I’ve seen him has looked pretty good at second base. He has pretty good range and his arm is fairly strong and accurate.

Going to second the disappointment with Adams as well. For a pitcher who spent three years in college, he should be doing better in Low-A. He’s sitting in the upper 80s, he’ll occasionally touch 91, but he’s not striking many out and walking over 4 per 9 innings.

Another disappointing pick to me is Evan Frederickson. I just thought he was a complete reach. So much for his upper 90s heat in a workout at Miller Park last year. He was upper 80s last year and low 90s this year combined with 8.7 BB/9 in his career. Just seems like a wasted pick to me that early in the draft. Hope I’m wrong.

And how can the Brewers have an organizational need at 2B when the first two hitters they drafted last year are playing there?

Also, early nominee for worst pick in the 2008 draft when you do this next year: Cody Adams. He was supposedly working in the low 90s and touching 96 when he was drafted out of SIU, but he’s sitting in the high 80s now and not pitching nearly as well as a college pitcher should be in A-ball.

Yeah, I think the hoopla over Lawrie’s defense is overblown and based off reports from spring training, when, by all accounts, he was pretty bad. Since then, however, Reid Nichols and Jeff Isom are on record saying they can’t believe how quickly he’s improved. I’ve seen Lawrie play, and he looked raw out there, but by no means laughable.

…a little soon to be calling Lawrie out on his defense, isn’t it?

Especially since, by all reports, he has the tools necessary to handle it.
