Another fact you left out is that Heilman is notoriously a slow starter. Granted, he has started slower this year than in the past, but he usually gets it going around this time of year (and hopefully he doesnt give up any big ones this October)

Jessica, thanks. I could definitely give it a look when I get home (job meeting at 1:30). With the amount of pitches, there will be enough for us to see what HAS happened, but not necessarily what may happen in the future; as in I couldn't make a definitive conclusion that if he corrects A then B will happen.

Good work, Eric. As a Mets blogger, I've heard all sorts of vitriol directed at Heilman from my readers, and I've been searching for an answer to explain his early-season struggles. I was actually thinking of asking you to take a look at the pitch/fx data to see if there was anything interesting there (particularly against LHB - Heilman is usually decent against lefties but has been torched by them so far this year), but I figured that there wouldn't be enough pitches to work with this early in the season.
