Pete, Jeff Nelson did it in 1993 but that's AL - I was talking about the NL since all of the game recaps must have been referring to the 18 yr differential taking place in the NL.

I thought Randy Johnson made an appearance in LF for an out, I'm almost sure of it. Maybe in '93 or so? Hmm....haven't found it, so I guess I'm mistaken. Maybe Lou almost had to do this and he talked about it after the game and I remember that or something.

Tango et al talk about having two pitchers in the game at a time in "The Book." Have one righty, one lefty and whoever isn't pitching can stay in the outfield. Be interesting to see someone try it (or the LOOGY/ROOGY from JMHawkins), just to get the reactions of the players involved. I'm guessing there are some pitchers who'd like the challenge and others who wouldn't go near the idea.

Y'know, this makes me think. Could there be a role for a hybrid? What if a team had a matched pair of relievers, a LOOGY and a, um, ROOGY who could each play a servicable leftfield. Swap them around for the matchups to get through an inning? I supposed it would help if each of them were heavy groundball pitchers.

Yeah, I believe the articles recapping the Braves game with that information was referring to National League games as I found the Nelson game a few hours ago and wondered why it was not mentioned.

"This proved to be the first time in eighteen years that a player both pitched and played the field in the same inning."

Actually, it happened at least as recently as 7/15/1993 at Fenway, when Jeff Nelson got two outs for the Mariners in the bottom of the eighth and then moved to left field while lefty Dennis Powell retired Mike Greenwell for the third out. Nelson then closed the game out in the bottom of the ninth.

Here's the box score:

Man did the Braves pitching dominate tonight. Strong start by Smoltz, 5 innings 10 k's.

They are really trying to limit his innings as much as possible, hopefully helping his longevity and preventing injury.

Maybe the Braves will finally break out of their slump this year and start to pick things up. Back-to-back-to-back home runs sure doesn't hurt.
