Part of the comeback was fueled by Tampa Bay’s decision to use Grant Balfour, not a left-hander, to pitch to Ortiz in the seventh. Ortiz was 1 for 4 off Balfour, 1 for 9 off Howell and 1 for 11 off Miller. But more importantly Ortiz's power is substantially less against lefties and HR was the only way they get the crowd back in the game there.

Fangraphs got some love on boston.com too. The live Win Expectancy was on there somewhere today. A friend emailed it to me but I can't find where on the site he saw it. Good stuff.

Trev,

There's no doubt that Tampa's bullpen is the goat of the game, but that's obvious and I was trying to dig a little deeper. I am certainly not letting a bullpen that allowed eight runs in 2.2 innings off the hook.

How much did Longoria's error affect the outcome?

Rays WinExp w/ 2 out, none on: 46.3%
Rays WinExp w/ Longoria's error effectively putting runners on 1st & 2nd: 38.6%
Rays WinExp w/ J.P. Howell leaving a 3-1 changeup in the middle of the plate: 0.0%

Choose your goat accordingly.
