Fantastic point. Just because Haren got the rbi walk, doesn’t mean it was flawed reasoning. The only way this ISN’T the right move is if you can’t trust the pitcher to follow the game plan ( not allowing a run with the opponent’s pitcher at the plate and two outs) or can’t replace him with someone who will. A.J. Hinch lucked into a good result there, which doesn’t mean he wasn’t right to take that chance to get lucky AND still have Haren on the mound.

Ok, I’m trying to sort through the sarcasm. Do people really think Dan Haren is a better hitter than Chris Young because of a .307 wOBA in a sss?

The small amount of run expectancy that LaRussa sacrificed was probably worth the gain in chances that Haren would be pich hit for and then replaced on the mound.

I was being sarcastic because making any judgments on Haren’s hitting ability based on 192 career PA or 49 PA this year is not possible.

Also, if you actually think Tony LaRussa considered whether or not Haren had a “sustainable BABIP” you might be out of your mind. And if you do believe that, then it wouldn’t be crazy to assume that he also knows the methodology in “The Book,” and thus it was still a poor decision.

Haren’s .345 BABIP is totally unsustainable, obviously Tony LaRussa took that into account when making the IBB call…

Kinney’s lack of control was the problem. To say that Chris Young is a worse hitter than Haren shows a fundamental lack of understanding of baseball, statistics, and sample sizes.

Everyone knows that LaRussa has a huge say in what the Cardinals front office does as far as trades. He likes to have his hand in everything, which as a Cards fan I am alright with.
