I like this move. And I wouldn't be too surprised if Julio got to see a few high leverage situations this year, as the state of the Brewers pen, well, just isn't very good at this point.

I had a quick question about calculating reliever value: how exactly does one account for leverage in the player's dollar value? I know leverage index is involved, but is there a specific calculation that you guys use?

Here's a small update for your spreadsheet if you're interested. The Twins reported budget for this season was $75 million dollars, roughly $18 million more than what they ended up spending on payroll.

Almost.

Copy and paste the 2008 team salary data from USAToday. Multiply the numbers by 1.xx (whatever you want the markup to be - I picked 5%, you can put whatever you want though). Subtract $12,000,000 to account for the cost of a team of replacement level players.

That's your marginal payroll. Divide by 40 to get team wide marginal $/win rates for a 90 win goal. If you want to pick different goal, just divide by a different number.

Sam, if you mean Dave's spreadsheet, you would have to ask him. It shouldn't be too tough to replicate, though. Go to the USA Today database, record the 2008 Payroll for each team, factor in a 5-6% markup, then divide by 40 and that will give you the average dollars/win for each team.
