How does defense factor into WAR? When you say Greene is a league average defensive SS and therefore a +2 WAR, does that assume he is a league average hitter as well? If a player were a replacement level defender and an average hitter how many WAR do they add? Or does that depend on how much one values defense?

+/- is published at Bill James Online, which charges $3 a month subscription fee. Fangraphs doesn't publish defensive statistics today. That won't be true on Monday morning, however.

Does anybody have a link to defensive +/- for last year? I'm trying to delve deeper into baseball stats and I don't believe they're on this site. Or are they on a pay site (Almanac or Prospectus, etc...)?

Greene's park adjusted wOBA last year was .274. Likely somewhat of an aberration considering it wasn't a full season's data, but yowza.

Thanks for the defensive articles, I read the two yesterday and was pleasanlty surprised to find the one on Greene today. I think that both his defensive and offensive downturn points toward a not giving an you know what attitude being on a horrible team last year, so I think the move to St. Louis will behoove both him and the Cardinals. I think your right, he'll be either average or a little better, especially when considering he's only 29.
