Interesting timing. I happened to catch Cruz's appearance last night against Boston, and his use of the changeup was a topic of discussion for the Boston announcers (NESN, i think... in Canada we just take what we're given).

With a 3-run lead, Cruz started by walking both Ortiz and Bay on 3-2 changeups. To those 2 batters he threw 6 FB, 6 CH, 1 SL.

After a visit from the pitching coach, he faced 3 more batters and threw 11 FB, 2 CH, 1 SL. The results were: groundball (FC), groundball (error), sac fly.

I can't comment on the rest of his season, but I can believe from last nights performance that more changeups isn't a good thing for Juan

His Change rate is up 10% and has added about 2 MPH while his fastball rate is also down about 10%. His contact percentage is up about 10%. I'm going to argue that it is a problem with throwing too many change-ups that aren't as good. Pitch f/x would confirm or deny, but it is a thought.

The new fly ball approach hasn't shown up in his home run rates, but he's still pitching far worse than in years past. In addition, he's not striking anyone out anymore. Lots of wrong going on for Juan Cruz.
