Pretty thin list for a team that has been putting emphasis on improving the farm for the past number of years. With their resources there is little excuse for the sad state of the system. The scouting is not up to snuff and I would love to see Oppenheimer shown the door.

I'll hopefully have time to do brief write-ups for the new two prospects on the Top 10 tomorrow, but they will be... pitchers D.J. Mitchell and Jeremy Bleich. If 2009 signees were included, I would have Slade, Gary Sanchez, and probably J.R. Murphy on the list. Keep an eye out for them when I update the Top 10s mid-season in 2010.

I do agree that Ivan Nova should be in the list. I was surprised in the first place that he was not in the original top 10. He was always considered as a prospect with good potential due to the expectations they had him with his stuff but it was not until 2009 season when he finally conquered several aspects of the pitching in the pro level and was able to dominate in the Eastern League. He struggled a bit in AAA but had a marvelous playoff performance that ended his season in positive note. Listening to several of his games, he sits at low-90's and has hit 95 several times. He also throws curve and change and likes to change speeds. He also is to have a good movement on his 4-seam fastball, which induces grounders. Lastly, he's only 22 (turning 23 in January) so there's another plus. I do not know how he will do in 2010 but I expect improvement in his AAA performance and he could be a mid-season callup if one of the Yankee starters go down on injury

2009 draft picks/international signees weren't included. probably would have made the original list if this weren't the case

I haven't seen any numbers on BB rates for latin vs non-latin prospects but it definitely seems that latin prospects are free swingers that don't walk a lot. Part of that is probably due to a different development background (academies vs HS) and usually being rushed. Another speculative argument is that a prospect that shows good plate discipline won't get noticed. I've never heard of an int'l signing (16 yr olds) that showed good plate discipline. it's always about how well they hit the ball, arm strength, speed and the other tools.

One thing about Montero's BB rate which isn't real high is that it's hard to walk when you are always putting the ball into. Instead of swinging thru the 2-1 pitch he makes contact. Whereas Stanton (and many other prospects) will swing thru that 2-1 pitch and later strikeout or walk.

Both Heyward and Montero have that great combination of contact and power. I'm big fans of these guys regardless of where Montero plays.

Overall seems about right. Viz and Dunn are gone now. Dunn was a bit high anyway (questionable if he is even top 10). He's not better than Melancon. He throws a bit harder but has no control. The only thing he really has on Melancon is the fact that he is lefty. I'll loose no sleep over trading him. Wilkins DeLaRosa who is already on the 40 man roster is probably a better lefty prospect than Dunn. He is still a starter now, but likely makes a move to the bullpen at some point this year and joins the major league bullpen at some point to replace Coke and Dunn. If we need a second lefty Boone Logan will fill that role for the time being. His overall numbers are terrible, but he has good splits against lefties so he can be used purely as a loogy.

Ivan Nova definitely should make the list. He'll be one of the first called up if there is an injury to the ML staff. He's almost as good of a prospect as McCallister.

As for the other spot that is now open due to the Javy trade. Choose whoever you prefer from a number of pitchers including: DeLaRosa, Bleich, DJ Mitchell, and Jairo Heredia.
