Dont be fooled by Bill James' projections, he had Petey with a low 3 ERA projected last year too and we saw how that worked out.

When he left the Red Sox, no one wanted to give him a 4 yr deal bc he was showing signes of breaking down, the mets finally caved so they could use Pedro as a marketing ploy to attract other FAs like Beltran.

A man with as much pride/ego as Pedro isnt going to turn into a reliever and risk tarnishing his HOF career.

The Bill James projections are a little more optimistic for Pedro, but the trick is not knowing if he can stay healthy for a season. I mean--as healthy as he's ever gonna be at this point. If he were to avoid further injury, and somehow ameliorate his catastrophic (10.35 ERA) first innings (which make the closer option dubious) he would be a pitcher worth signing. When his body cooperates, even without velocity, he is such a crafty pitcher he can get people out.

I would sign Pedro just for the fans period. He's Pedro... If you get 100 IP out of him, awesome he's a got to be an upgrade over most teams 5th starter. As a fan you have to get slightly excited about seeing him pitch.

I'm not sure having a homerun prone guy with velocity issues being your closer is such a good idea.

I would like to see Pedro the Closer. I don't think his body can take the innings anymore, he has very good/excellent pitches that could benefit from a little boost in velocity.

I think it would be worth a flier for a team like the Rays who don't really have a closer to offer the idea to him.
