Ruiz had a .972 OPS for the 3 months from Aug 1 through Nov 4. It was a nice extended surge -- I would love to see another 3 months of that in 2010, even if it's offset by another 3 months of .650 OPS ineptitude.

I don't mind the second year of the deal because the 2011 catchers pool is full of everyday starting catchers or complete slop.

it's not his fault, he is probably not looking forward to the sprained wrist and torn hamstring that is mandatory upon being added to the Mets' 40 man.

Moreover, Coste was quoted as saying “It’s the last team I ever saw myself playing for" after signing with the mets AND “It it wasn’t my choice to leave Philly,” Coste said. “I never wanted to leave Philadelphia, I will always consider myself a Phillie.”

Nice job with the title.

Schneider seems like a good 2nd catcher... and the ability to block wild pitches/prevent passed balls would be especially useful for Brad Lidge and his slider. Ruiz isn't much of a hitter himself (his career wOBA is only .011 higher) and given the strength of the Phils lineup, they can afford to have an offensive black hole at catcher in order to get a better defender behind the backstop.

I like the move, just from a spite perspective: the Mets sign Coste, so naturally the Phils go out and sign Schneider. Gotta love the NL East rivalries...

RJ,

Change the title. It's the Phillies that signed Schneider. Schneider produced a career low .233 BABIP. If he can get that back up closer to his career numbers, this contract should be okay for the Phillies.
