Pitch Type & Velocity: Leaderboards

The leaderboards are up for Pitch Type & Velocity! There are a couple standard leaderboard functions that do not work with the Pitch Type tab.

-Starters and Relievers cannot be broken down yet.
-You cannot filter by league.
-You can select the minimum IPs.
-You can select only qualified players.

If there’s a % sign in the column, it’s the percentage of pitches thrown and if there’s a “v” after the pitch type, it’s the average velocity of the pitch.

Quick refresher on what means what: FB – Fastball, SL – Slider, CT – Cutter, CB -Curveball, CH- Changeup, SF – Split-fingered Fastball, KN – Knuckleball, XX – Unidentified, PO – Pickoff Attempt

    Fantastic stuff!

Can I guess that Pitch Velocity leaderboards are forthcoming?

  2. Tom, what would you be looking for in a velocity leaderboard that isn’t in the current one?

Great stuff — This is by far my favorite stats related site.

I’ll take that back. I didn’t see the velocity columns. Maybe it’s just me, but perhaps a differnt column color for the velocity columns might provide the necessary contrast. Or maybe a line separator?

    So very cool…

I don’t see any reason to not have the Pitch Type / Velocity for hitters too, right? Would be nice to see what kind of pitches Vlad, Pujols, Beltran et al face, I would think.

How accurate is the discrimination between pitches? I noticed that some pitchers supposedly don’t throw pitches that they are credited for.

Also, is the velocity data taken from pitchfx data and is the production of that calibrated?

  7. hal: All the information is collected by Baseball Info Solutions. I assume the information is fairly accurate. From what I’ve seen it matches up with Pitchf/x pretty well in most cases.
