As far as Mauer putting the ball out of zone into play more often–a typical batter is better off missing/fouling these pitches, unless there are 2 strikes. in which case he is better off fouling it

At the time the article was written Mauer was ahead of Martin; then Mauer struck out in a pinch AB and went down to .817, which I did update, but Martin went up to .836 in a single game, which was not.
