What if the next inning the guy faces 7-8-9 (particularly in the NL). Is that really a SHI or just luck? The Phillies score a chunk of their runs in bunches by the HR... I'm sure they are "shut down" a lot in between those run explosions (as the Dodgers are discovering).

It strikes me as a somewhat tortured stat. I'm not sure of what value it is... but being a baseball junkie myself... I'M HOOKED TO THE ANALYSIS!

Well the thing with these SHIP is that it really depends on the offense. If a team doesn't score than subsequent innings won't qualify. And then there are run support situations wherein a team will trail 1-0 and score 6-7 runs in an inning; even though they came back and provided plenty of run support, the lead wouldn't enable a half-inning to be a SHIP.

I would also love to know how the SHIP inning compares to any other innings that pitcher throws? Is it a greater pattern on just these type of innings?

Oh, I'm not married to it. It could definitely be reduced to +-3 instead of 4. I have heard numerous announcers make the assertion that once the team either creeps back into the game or slowly inches in the lead direction that the pitcher really needs to come out and shut the team down. This is just attempting to represent that in stat form. It could even be broken up into SHIPs when trailing and when leading.

The major reason I started it at 4 is that the most recent game in which I heard this mentioned involved a team trailing by four and then hitting a 3-run homer. The announcers eluded to the fact that it would be imperative for the pitcher to shut the team down in the following inning to maintain the momentum.

This kind of feels like a holds type of stat for starting pitchers. Do you think -4/+4 runs is too loose a criteria? At the start of any inning with a +4/-4 score differential the leverage index is always below 1, which suggests there shouldn't be much pressure on the pitcher. You only start to get LIs above 1 at the -3/+3, and then it's also only with the lead.

Pitching from behind leaves you with a much lower LI than pitching with the lead, which says pitchers have way more to lose when trying to hold a lead than they do when trying to keep the game close.
