As a Cardinals fan, I watched some of Maroth's starts in 07. In his first start he was actually very good: 7.1 IP, 2 hits, 1 HR, 2 walks, 4 K's, 1 run, but then it all went downhill from there.

I remember when the Cardinals traded for Maroth, there was a hope that he could find his old form again and get back on the track people were projecting for him early in his career, but it became so apparent as time went on that he just didn't have it and it was not anywhere near finding it. It wasn't fun to see a guy like that who wasn't far removed from a bright future in that position.

I made a graph the other day looking at the range of K-Rates in MLB this decade, and one of the points that stuck out most as being abnormally outside the general range was Cornejo's 2003 season. Kind of funny that I should encounter his name twice in one week after not having heard anything of him in years.

I think it deserves mentioning that Mike Maroth was off to a terrific start to his 2006 campaign, but suffered an elbow injury in May or June that I believe required surgery. He missed most of the season, I think came back very late and was completely ineffective, and hasn't really been the same since. I have to wonder if that 06 elbow problem was the one that ruined his career. It's unfortunate, cause he had a nice future and was a great guy off the field too.
