Hirsh will be a cog in the upcoming Washburn deal, because I’m sure Seattle would add a guy like Hirsh in Safeco without batting an eye.

SWB Yankees, the AAA squad, had 3 starting pitchers. They kept having relievers make spot starts. Hirsh will never see the AL East, this was purely a minor league depth move, one not really deserving of a fan graphs piece, but whatever.

Tomko’s release was because he’s Brett fucking Tomko and isn’t good at pitching. Didn’t have much to do with who was replacing him, really.

Tomko’s release was completely unrelated. He was DFA’d to free a roster spot for Mitre, it’s just coincidental that the end of the 10 day DFA period coincided with this move.

Hirsh had already been outrighted by the Rockies on 7/10/09.

Hirsh will most likely never pitch in the AL East, he’s going to be used to fill a rotation spot at AAA since the Yankees were short a starter there.

Tomko was NOT DFA to clear room for Hirsh. Tomko was released to make room for Hirsh since Tomko had already been DFA’ed last week.
